An adult orangutan looks annoyed as the small hand of a younger ape is seen pulling the hair on top of its head.
Young apes often double down on teasing older family members when they get no reaction. (BOS Foundation BPI)

Apes like to monkey around

Young great apes like to playfully hit or poke or pull the hair of older apes — just like human children do to adults. A study of zoo-kept bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans suggests that the cognitive tools for ‘joking around’ might date back at least 13 million years ago, to our last common ancestor. “Playful teasing is a thing,” says anthropologist and study co-author Erica Cartmill. It brings up questions “about what animals understand about other animals’ minds, expectations and the strength of their relationships”, she says.

A Geoffroy's spider monkey (<i>Ateles </i><i>geoffroyi</i>) makes its way across muddy terrain. It has a long upright tail with a curl at the end. It has long toes and fingers on its black hands and feet, and a furry golden brown coat over the rest of its body. Its small face is pink with black and white fur on its head.

Primates with tails — such as this Geoffroy’s spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi) — lack a certain DNA insertion that people have. ( Credit: Mark Newman/Getty)

How humans lost their tails

Researchers have shown that humans and other apes carry a DNA insertion in a gene called TBXT that other primates with tails, such as monkeys, don’t have. And mice carrying similar alterations to their genomes have short or absent tails. “They clearly show that this change contributes to tail loss. But it’s not the only one,” says human geneticist Malte Spielmann. Apes aren’t the only primates without tails, suggesting that the trait evolved multiple times. “Probably, there are multiple ways of losing a tail during development. Our ancestors chose this way,” says co-author Bo Xia.
