Nature can seem cruel but it's seldom malicious. In the pursuit of survival, components of nature interacts with the windfall going to the most fit. Humans, on the other hand, struggle to not be malicious. It's a struggle that often loses to greed and ignorance.

Advancement of societies is based on innovations, which are largely the byproduct of scientific understanding. There has always been individuals with a disdain of learning; that's natural. However, there is a political perspective (here in the US) that has shown downright resentment and distrust of science. Intellectualism is feared and scorned. When a society actively pursues ignorance, merits corrode and the framework plunges into a dark age. Despite their highly vocal and well organized efforts we're not there -yet.
Yes, the Don didn't do the scientific world any favors. Prior to the outbreak of the worldwide pandemic (of COVID) the US had a response team to asses such threats and recommend strategies. Don dismantled this network and fired the doctors involved. When it did strike we were left floundering, disorganized and inept. Fear not, he recommended having doctors somehow applying disinfectant, like bleach, internally.
Watching ignorance is unsettling.
Seeing willful ignorance is painful.
