Not as a defense, but he grew up not too far from where I did, and his viewpoints are par for the course for the area. So it's really not too surprising.
He's gotten very nutty. I hope this doesn't result in him refusing any work requiring nudity, not that he did much in the first place.

It's not really uncommon that people can both be religious/church goer while also being secular in many ways, i.e, being selective of what you believe. Some people would call that hypocrisy and I get that.
