A starry night sky with a long bright comet in the foreground

If you can't see the comet 12P/Pons-Brooks in person, check out this incredible picture taken of it earlier this month from the US. Don't expect it to look like this in the sky though — this image is taken with a camera set-up made for space photos.

Got a great science-related photo? Send it to us and it might feature in a future newsletter! (Remember to make it high resolution — about 1-2MB.)

A green comet streaking through a star studded sky

This week, Australians will be able to see comet 12P/Pons-Brooks for the first time in 71 years — even without a telescope or binoculars. Here's how to spot it and snap a photo.

mystery oof the deep/or ocean t me bd/;ike light as such
seems prevalent in space
so much we dont kbow oof/unexplained huh
A mystery to most. But it is something very interesting.

WITNESS - “This light source was 100% on the bottom of the ocean, and not something that was floating through the water column. It did not move in the current. The water depth at this specific location was 60’ deep. This object did not have a physical shape that we could detect. It was invisible to our sonar.”

Today we explore Io, the most volcanically active place in the Solar System. Plus, we learn that nearly half of China’s major cities are sinking and discover a connection between queasiness and hunger.
A global view of Io, covered in yellow clouds and red patches.
The volcanic activity on Jupiter’s moon Io is caused by friction and heating in its centre due to gravitational interactions with neighbouring moons. (NASA/JPL/University Of Arizona)

I can't pretend I think this is one of the best I've taken.......because I'm well aware it's far from it.
All I can say is I took it because I liked the shower falling a few miles to the south....and the chinks of blue sky through the clouds at the top right.

The slow (VERY slow) Spring of 2024 continues....
