Dont forget he's British. You cant bring your "American" standards and distinctions into this. Look at the rest of British media and you'll see they are generally a bit more relaxed with their acting choices.

Maybe a lot of him is just show. He might be a nerd at heart who happens to look good and get into roles. He was overweight and got bullied for that but he had a rather good school and education and got into acting and fitness somehow. Maybe even some connections from his private school days...

He's definitely a Nerd/geek. Just a good-looking one with a great body and ass. He is known to play videogames during shooting of TV shows and movies. Hell. He even built his own gaming PC. Also very private. So I can see why he isn't comfortable with nudity, sex scenes, or anything shirtless. Now that he has a bit of power he can dictate what happens in most of the stuff he's in now.
