I am moving to Hong Kong
Posted 1 Week Ago at 08:02 PM by themrsir
I have been making a lot of life decisions lately and have pondered whether a move to a foreign country might be a good idea.
It is a good idea for me!!!
Hong Kong seems perfect for me. However, I will not know until I go. So, I am saving up my money and learning as much Cantonese as possible for a trip.
Mains reasons why I think this is a good idea:
1) I love asian women more than anything else in the world.
2) All the pictures of HK look awesome and it is warm there year round.
3) My cousin has visited and says it is her favorite city in the world.
4) I can easily pursue the my career there.
5) I've always felt like an outsider in the U.S. and moving to HK will make me an outsider for real.
What could I be missing?

| | I've never lived there, but have visited many times. I love HK. Don't miss Macau and the neighboring territories. Sometimes I think half the furniture in my house is from over there. Good luck, and let us know how it goes. |

| | The best of luck to you! The ex-pat life is fabulous. Every time I go to leave the country, business comes up and I get stuck here. What is your line of work that you can do it in Hong Kong? I am sure you will love it. I have ex-pat friends there who love it. Keep us posted! |

| | HK is very expense - and very, very nice... I've been there and Mainland probably 25 times over the past 8 years... Asian women are beautiful - that's a big reason I married my wife... To this day, I can't stand to be away from her... It's less expense in some of the near-by territories, but not my much... Other Southeast Asia countries are much less expensive, but the standard of living is much less also... This is a huge consideration as to where you live and how you will make your livelihood... If you were to begin your own business, HK & Singapore are excellent to start... If you choose Mainland China, then make sure you are in a proper Economic Zone that will help facilitate your business... Local knowledge is priceless... If I were you, I'd work extremely hard at networking with as many people as you possibly can... Housing, employment, relationships, banking, shopping -- all are greatly influenced by "who you know"... You can't be afraid of hurricanes/cyclones - HK gets whacked pretty regularly... Torrential rains are a problem in HK because of the topography -- very, very hilly there... I wish you the best and remember to have an exit strategy -- figure ones out at different intervals, like one year, 5 years, and a 15 year plan... |

| | Number one, Learn Mandarin. Not Cantonese. While HK is still chock full of Cantonese speakers... Mandarin is the official language of China, and practically all chinese learn Mandarin. Also- Mandarin has only 4 'tones'... and so is generally easier to pick up. If you are tone deaf... don't bother even trying... you will never learn to speak Chinese. Some of the best things about HK is that you will find the best food from all over the world there... not just kickass Chinese food. If you are on the Kowloon side... look up Knutsford Terrace-- its a row of top quality restaurants and bars... Tapas, Italian... And down at the ferry landing--- in the shopping center is Dan Ryan's... Good Chicago style food.... ( trust me, you will be aching for some western food) Mandarin will also serve you in better stead for travel around China. Inland from HK is Shenzhen... a pretty spectacular city.. just south Macao... old Portuguese colonial town with casinos. And if HK is too pricey for you... look into the tip of the peninsula that forms Sechou... Its a lovely spot... good bars, nice and quiet... and walking distance from downtown HK... How? Walk to the ferry, hop aboard... and 20 minutes later you are stepping off in HK, Kowloon or Stanley. Good luck and have a great time. PS- you will find the HK women are pretty jaded... But the mainland Chinese women are sweet, beautiful, and fascinated with western men. |
