I'd told Pam that we needed to talk. To be strictly accurate, it was I who felt the need to talk. She, to my bewilderment, didn't seem to realise there was any pressing need at all for any heart-to-heart chat.

Having done all the work, I lay on my back breathing heavily for a while. Pam rolled over so her back was toward me. She said nothing. Silence reigned. I felt like a guest who'd committed some awful faux pas, a gaffe so enormous that I would from this night onward be shunned by polite society.

Well, I hadn't expected to enjoy Saturday night's dinner party but - much to my surprise - I did! The food was excellent and it was great to spend time with so many friends, some of whom I've known for almost thirty years, right back to when we were young and invincible in the eighties.

Well, my determination to get into shape got off to a glorious start on Day 1 (last Thursday). Sadly, Day 2 (Friday) was considerably less than glorious. It was a debacle!
