Melatonin 3mg?

Posted 06-20-2008 at 10:26 AM by Austin Blue
I've always been a very light sleeper. Some nights I toss and turn all night. Most nights I wake up every few hours.

I was taking Melatonin for a while and stopped. My sleeping was terrible. I would wake up and feel tired all day.

So for the past week, i've been taking 3mgs x 2 easy dissolve tablets before bed. But, I keep waking up. I go to bed at 10pm, wake up around 3am, and again at 5am. What is the deal? The good news is that I seem to get a better sleep with the Melatonin. I feel more rested. But I never seem totally refreshed each morning upon waking.

Any thoughts?

using two? God, no. It has a drag effect if you use too much. You'll be half focused for the remainder of the day. They used to sell it in 25 mg or 50 mg, which was excessive.

Valerian + melatonin sounds good. I find kava effective, but it tastes like dirt (and the capsulated stuff is hard to come by). L-trytophan is slightly expensive, but can be had cheaper over the internet.

I combine the items for a different synergistic effect.

I also take two aspirins before bedtime as well.

Hey..I saw your post....I've had the same problem.....and when your chemicals are low...you don't sleep well...melatonin...serotonin....etc. I finally started using Trypotophan from LITKE....and it is the best I've used.....I take 2 tablets before bed and as soon as my head hits the pillow, I'm out.....and I sleep all night long....7-8 hours...and feel great the next day...You might want to give it a try...It has been a lifesaver for me....Take care...

I'd say get some good exercise to tire you out, but that's my advice for many problems.

I am a bad sleeper and work in an industry that jacked up my body clock so I feel your pain. My exwife is an MD and has said over and over that .5mg is the MAX that one needs to kick in the production of melatonin and get a good night sleep. Pill popping for sleep disorders without medical supervision is risky behavior (Heath Ledger anyone?).

EXERCISE and diet are also very key factors in quality sleep. My lightest meal of the day is about 4 hours before bedtime. I keep it high in complex carbs and try to eat lean protein with tryptophan (fish, chicken, turkey). The Tryptophan it self does not knock you out...but the slow burn of amino acids will aide a good nights rest.

thanks everyone for all the help. i had no idea that 2 x 3mg was too much as it says on the bottle that you can take upto 3 x 3 mg tablets per night. and yeah the exercise helps a bit, but my issue is waking up during the night. last night was a good night. i only woke up once and it was around 5am. I actually feel much better this morning. it feels like i actually had a decent sleep!

I take 5-Hydroxy-L-Tryptophan every morning, and just before lights out. I sleep soundly, and I feel rested in the morning. It causes the body to make more seratonin. A doctor put me on it for treatment of fibromyalgia. It started working in 2 weeks time. Progressive Labs in Irving,Texas makes it. An MD or DC can get it for you. It costs me 30 dollars a month but it works great.

Doesn't OCMUSCLEJOCK work with alternative medicine? Ask him what he thinks.

When you wake up, is it to pee or are you just waking up in general?

Watch out for the mg dosage of melatonin, the brain only produces mcg in the pituitary gland. Try taking a 5-HTP blend or something similar. Most of the alternative blends will have a great combination of 5-HTP, Valerian, and GABA. You may even try a homeopathy like Calms Forté, which works really well. Revitalizing Sleep by Enzamatic Therapy or Knock-out by Schiff are good too. If you really wanted to stick with the melatonin reduce the amount to 1mg and use a liquid or sublingual tablet to get it into your system faster. The other thing you may want to do is monitor your stimulant intake and start taking a decent multivitamin (like "Alive!") to get yourself balanced again. Best of luck, and sleep well.

PS--work at a herbal supply store.

I started taking 50mg of Trazadone starting last night. The dose is one to two tablets. I took two and didn't notice anything - maybe it takes a few days to start working?
