The History of Locker Room Design

I'm just curious to hear everyones thoughts on the history of locker room design.

Tell us about what your current locker room is like?

What your college locker rooms were like?
At the gym?
In the Dorms?
At the Frat House?

What your High School Locker room was like?

What the locker room was like at anywhere else where you change clothes and shower and how you have observed the designs change over the years?

At high school when we went for a swim in our school, we had seperate cabines to change. But suddenly they decided to make one lockerroom for guys and one for girls, so nobody could change seperately. Itw as better that way and also easyer because you had a lot more space.

Could you please explain this further?

My gym lockerroom looks like a gay porn set! Not kidding.

The lockers are around the outside walls with a big frosted glass shower cube in the centre. There are cubicles inside the shower cube but you can see the outlines/blurred images of the other blokes showering outside the cube.

If that wasn't enough the actual shower appliances are like the old school outside ones, distressed metal with a triangular handle that u pull down to realease the water. Just like in Flashdance.

Also the steam room had a perspex window so you can see in and the clear door looks into the shower cube.

I love my gym

Well we had this retro dressingarea. It was hallway with cabines of stone, with a shower in every cabin (they didn't worked). Every student had his own cabin. You left your clothes there and got to swim. The downside of it all was that the cabins were very small. Luckily the school decided to make big lockerrooms.

About the only difference between the lockerroom in high school and my new gym now is that the gym has individual shower stalls. High school was a large tiled in area with two columns of shower heads on either end. The guys gathered around in a circle, so to speak to shower.

In college it was a bit different, but there were individual showerheads along the wall.

In the grown up world there's a bit more privacy in the bathing area, but that's about as far as it goes. Lockers against the wall, wooden bench on pipes stuck in the concrete floor. Doesn't smell as bad, though.

So basically its like a dressing room at a clothing store, and each student has there own.

Do they lock during class?
Are you assigned the same cubicle each day?

Sounds like an interesting concept, but also seems as though it would allow for lots of things to go on without the teachers knowledge. I can't imagine how they could possibly fit a shower in there without having it so you get all of your clothes wet.



Do you have any pics of your gym? Whats it called? Where is it located so I can see what I can find, sounds like a really cool design, just can't visualize it well.

If a gym was all gay, it would be hot to have the lockers around the walls like you said and then have a clear glass large open shower, with spouts around the wall so when people are showing they are looking right at the lockers, or have a poll shower in the middle of the clear glass cube, but that design would definatly be way to intimidating for a str8 gym.

OKey, how should I make this clearer. Well it was a hallway with cabins made of stone. Each cabin had a first space fro changing clothes (one meter by one meter) and after that space a shower (also one by one meter), like a small rectangle splitted in two areas. There was no curtain so everything would get wet if the showers worked.
We weren't assigned the same cubicle everyday, you just took the cubicle that was free at the moment. You couldn't lock the doors, but no other classes weren't allowed at the pool when there was a class swimming. So there was no change that stuff got stolen.

Every one I've ever used has been open, communal and tile from floor to ceiling. They've also usually been in between the pool and the entrance. Very much like the classical gymnasia.

We had a few semesters of swimming-only in HS. It was likely an agreement between the school and the nearby municipal pool. We had the whole pool reserved for the HS students on certain days.

There were individual changing stalls at the pool, but they were reserved for the public.

Schools were assigned large (locked) changing rooms, one for the boys one for the girls. We would change into our swimwear, then head to the men's showers and then to the adjacent pool.
