There are so amny more people worthy of mention tho, I mean Liberace, did'nt even identify himself as gay! HE might be camp but I wouldn't say Great...

One of the most overlooked characters from the 20th century was man who worked not far from where I live, a man from England, called Alan Turing. He was a mathematical genius of the first calibre, his intellect was massive. The British Government, during the second world war, employed him to research coding used by the Nazi's. it was largely due to him that the Bletchley Park team cracked the Enigma code which wa so useful in beating the Germans. His research established the first modern computer and his papers and theses underpinned the technological age that followed.

After the war he was blackmailed by a young man aged 19 of his acquaintance and was burgled, on going to the police he was forced, as was legal at the time to undergo hormone therapy when it became clear the Turing had had sexual relations with this man. In 1954 he commited suicide eating a cyanide laced apple. He was only 41.

The consequence of his endeavours cannot be underestimated, his influence on the field of mechanical computation is still utilised by everyone who uses a computer. He was in my mind, a Great Man.
