Donnie Darko is a GREAT film. That's another storyline that you have to ponder after you watch it. The bad thing is that most of the gems of film-making go under the radar of most of the general public.

That movie was as visually disturbing as it was stunning.

Tequila Sunrise wasn't a great movie; but the three main charcters had the bluest eyes I have ever seen in a film. In each scene they were in it was as if blue topaz had been placed where their eyes belonged.

Luc Besson movies tend to always be visually stunning.

Also, Kenneth Brannaugh's Hamlet adaption.

I just grabbed "House of Flying Daggers" today in blu-ray HD and it is STUNNING, especially the snow scene. I LOVE blu-ray. It's the best thing to happen to TV in a long time.

I apologize BUT,
Sin City was INCREDIBLE.
Bar none.

The beginning of Wall-E was an amazing depiction of earth destoryed.

The Rules of Attraction had FANTASTIC cinematography.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre [35 MM can't beat it]

Let's not forget how visually visceral films like "Saving Private Ryan" and Schindler's List" were. The first 15 minutes of "Saving Private Ryan" were shattering.
"The Pianist" was also a film that left you totally drained emotionally.
My idea of a visually stunning film is one where you can turn the audio off completely, and still be moved by what your eyes are taking in.

Yes.

Ben-Hur.

Saving Private Ryan, since I don't think anyone mentioned it.

EDIT: ^Fuck, that's what I get for not reading the bottom of the last page...both those films are incredible. Schindler's List is one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen, bar none.

A small film that had a unique visual appeal to it, is "Baby's Day Out". It has a very Art Deco, almost cartoon-like look to it. The film is also funny as hell.

Anything produced by Merchant and Ivory (Room with a View, Maurice) will be visually stunning. Another that I like is Women in Love directed by Ken Russel and starring Glenda JACKSON, Lynn Redgrave, Alan Bates, and Oliver Reed.

These two get my vote along with the latest Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley in BlueRay.

But "Daggers" is one of the most amazing movies I have ever seen.

Motorcycle Diaries is beautifully shot and includes some amazing scenary throughout South America. Big Fish has some pretty dazzling visual effects.

Eternal Sunshine, my favorite, never ceases to amaze. It might not seem that special at first, but you have to keep in mind that there are absolutely no special effects. Everything is shot live using Gondry's amazing cinematography skills.
