18 year old gets a Vasectomy

Yesterday I took one of my best friends to get a vasectomy, not a big deal but he is 2 weeks past his 18th birthday and just finished his senior year in high school. He said this is what he always wanted but I think it has to do with his girlfriend getting pregnant when he was 15 but they baby turned out not to be his. I don't think I could ever get the snip-snip

Do you guys think 18 is to young?

yes I think it's too young! especially if he doesn't have any kids yet.

Long history of abuse? horrific disease run in the family? Wanting to stop the bloodline?

it can be reversed with another surgery but still... I hope he made the right decision

I'm surprised a doctor would snip someone that young. as he gets older, the urge and need to have/raise a child may change from what it is now.

i'm supprised they did it too, unless there was a medical reason for doing it...

Even though i know it's his wishes, i would have an ethical issue with doing that if i was a Doctor, unless i was certain he fully understood what he was doing - i would need to make sure he was mentally sound.

Even though it can be 'reversed', the longer it's been done for, the harder it is to reverse....

Wow, if that's what he wants to do...I guess he is old enough to decide. But I'm 18, and I can't even imagining getting a vasectomy.

If he is of majority age, it's absolutely his right to have it done.

I have never had any desire, and still have no desire, to have children. When I was still exploring my orientation, I took precautions to ensure I would not get anyone pregnant. Now that I am exclusively gay, it's not an issue. I probably would not have made that decision before age 20, but it would not have been long after that, if I had continued having sex with women.

Most places around here wont do it unless your in your 30s or have had kids already.

he's too young, unless he wants to stop his own gene pool. it is reversible but i would not want to go thru that. I was 38 when i had my vasectomy done, and had 3 children by my wife, and possibly fathered 2 more before i met and married her.

He's old enough to join the Army, go overseas, and kill people but not old enough to choose a vasectomy for himself? Really?

Wow Steve, what a moodkiller you are.

None the less, my mom said that even with 5 kids that a doctor asked them and reasked them a dozen times about if they were sure they wanted a vasectomy. I know a few women who got their tubes tied before having kids and the docs were hesitant but did it.

It probably depends on the doctor. I know when i talked to my urologist about my husband getting one that he didn't even reask me about it, he said sure send him on in and i can do it in a few minutes.

Hell yes, it's too young! Your friend is a moron and the doctor who did it should be hit upside the head with a 2x4.

Does your casanova friend realize he still has to use condoms to prevent the spread of disease? Plus, not many women are going to believe him when he says, "it's cool baby, I had a vasectomy at 18."

I agree. Perhaps if he's a practicing Jew and knows he carrys the Tay Sach's gene, which is always fatal for the child, then okay. I'm sure there are other diseases which are equally devastating but that one has been in the news lately.

Isn't that a little harsh and judgemental? Did you ever consider that he may indeed still wear a condom, but understands that there is a tiny failure rate that he doesn't want to be responsible for?

It's ignorant for you to call him a moron, and advocate violence against the doctor.

Plus, it's as much a woman's responsibility as a man's, to deal with birth control. Men have been known to say, "it's cool, baby, I had a vasectomy" as often as women have been known to say, "it's cool, baby, I'm on the pill." Either one is a moron to take the other's word and go bareback.

How hard is it for a woman to say, "I'm glad you had a vasectomy, but that's not all a condom is for. No glove, no love."

But the biggest issue is, if he is of majority age, how is it anyone else's business to make such a personal, intimate decision for him? Is it his body, or is it not?

I know for a fact that if a healthy woman of the same age were to make the same decision, no responsible doctor in the United States would do the surgery. That is the source of my intensity, the double standard. Yes, he's an adult. Who among us thinks exactly the same way at 30+ that we did at 18? I maintain it was a bad decision on both their parts.

Agreed! IMHO 18 is just too young to be making that kind of decision.

It's not hard at all, I have said it myself to one man. Then again, he was 40, divorced and had 2 children already.

It is, but I still feel it was a dumb decision.

Still his decision nonetheless. Even if it does rob him of potentially having kids.
