Saw them in the early 80's. I enjoyed them more at keg parties played on vinyl than I did live. Canadian rock, like Aldo Nova better than Rush, even though Rush had way more music.

Yeah, Aldo Nova was just awesome with their one good song! lol!!!

I put Aldo Nova in the same category as Patrick Hernandez...

One hit wonders.

God... Rush... where do I start? I learned the chronicles cassette tapes when I was sick with the flu in high school. Figuring out all of those Rush songs (except for YYZ and La Villa Strangiata... I was only sick for a couple of days) made me one HELL of a guitar player and is the basis for my guitar playing style.

Can I give Alex a shout out? He gets overshadowed by Neil and Geddy, but he did more for showing rock guitar players what extended harmonies mean and the proper use of a chorus effect... his vibrato style was akin to the great Jeff Beck, real fluid and vocal-like.

Everyone knows that Geddy is a monster... you can't beat a Fender Jazz or a "Rick" through an Ampeg, his sound was as sick as his playing.

Come on now, I'll give Rush credit where it's due, but after "Moving Pictures", they really sucked. WTF was "Roll the Bones", when I heard what they were calling it "funk/hip-hop rock", I couldn't take them seriously even though the album went Platinum/Double Platinum ? Talk about crap, that's when America was buying into Milli Vanilli !

I was going to do the same but figured people didn't want to get bored with the technical aspect of it. Supreme use of the chorus effects, and those suspended chords he hits just hang there forever. So lush. I always tell people, if I could be on an island and only have one group's library of music to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be Rush. No doubt about it.

You know I had this sick fucking experience that really put me over the top with them back when I was in 7th or 8th grade I believe. You ever fall asleep and wake up in a bout of sleep paralysis? You know, when you can't move no matter how hard you try, but you can still see? A lot of people confuse this with being abducted by aliens, or don't they...

Anyway, I used to have my little boom box on my bed next to me and one night fell asleep to one of the Chronicles CDs, I believe the second one. And woke up in a bout of sleep paralysis and it was during the climax to Distant Early Warning, talk about an awesome and haunting experience! I couldn't fucking move but "the world weighs on my shoulders, but what am I to do? RED ALERT RED ALERT" was pumping from right behind me. And over the music I just heard this laugh like the Joker's laugh. I have been one with Rush ever since.

Have you heard Vapor Trails. Came out before Snakes and Arrows and a better album overall, imo. My fav. tracks on the album are "Ceiling Unlimited" ("Winding like an ancient river the time is now again"), "Ghost Rider", "Peaceable Kingdom" ("Swords against the kingdom, time against the tower" - scary), "Secret Touch" ("A gentle hand, a secret touch on the heart"), "Earthshine" (hauntingly beautiful - you can almost hear the earth move), "Sweet Miracle", and "Freeze (Fear pt. 4)" ("Sometimes I freeze until the light comes, sometimes I fly into the night" - incredible sounds on this track once you figure out where it's going).

Btw Roll the Bones had some good stuff in it, including the title song and the incredibly touching "Ghost of A Chance".

Yes, listened and moved on from Rush. I appreciate them for what they produced, but let's face it, even in their best/better era, there were several bands I preferred. That's not to say they weren't very good, but "greatness" ? We could post a battle of the bands, album vs album and you could match a Rush album vs the rest and across the board, there is a lot of work out there that is simply preferred listening to Rush's best output. Given a choice Springsteen or Rush concert on the same night, I go see Springsteen. VH or Rush on the same night ? VH hands down. Rush vs U2 for 3-4 hours, that's a no brainer there either. So how deep into what's available to listen to, before Rush becomes the preference ? I may be one of the few ? But I thought Rush was a must see show, until I went to one in the 80's. I realized I could've simply been at a keg party or in a small social gathering in an apartment at the time and gotten the same experience. The show I attended lacked energy and even interest at times.

I'm not the only one that holds this opinion either:

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/sto...ms_of_all_time

Although in all fairness, that list has many that I would prefer and gladly opt for a Rush concert.

Well, I've seen Springsteen twice too. Also saw Hendrix, Prince (twice), Yes (twice), Moody Blues (twice), Jethro Tull, Chic, Parliament (twice), Michael Jackson (at no cost, I knew someone), Donna Summer, Buddy Miles, Osibisa ("criss-cross rhythms that explode with 'appiness" - twice), Allman Brothers Band (twice), Men At Work, and at Jazz Fests, various other performers including Sting, James Brown, Dr. John, Steely Dan, and just this year, Carlos Santana (for the second time also).

(Almost saw Sly and the Family Stone two or three times. But they had the nasty habit of canceling the day before the gig, though. T'was "a family affair" I guess...)

There's a lot of fine music out there and I can't say I'd necessarily pick one over the other if I had to choose a same night concert. But seeing as how that's never going to happen...

It's not an argument of which group is best. That's wholly subjective.

Point is many (of us Rush fans) still like hearing the older songs now as much as before and look forward to what's coming still. Furthermore, in concert they have the (not all too common) ability to perform their music at least as good as their original track.

rolling stone and their reviews and top 100 lists are a complete fucking joke. They had eddie van halen at number 70 or some shit, and the guy from sonic youth in the top ten. SONIC YOUTH.

Come on, man, you say that Rush took a nose dive and you also say that Aldo Nova was better? Dude... seriously? Aldo Nova is a fucking joke that the CRTC forces on us with its Canadian Content rules. Let me guess, you think Sheriff was really tight too? How about the Headpins? Red Rider? Toronto? Prism?

Hahaha, just fucking with you. Don't care, personally, just because I dig Rush does not mean that everyone has to.

Rush didn't take much of a nose dive for me. They have songs I think are timeless classics, but they also have a lot of filler on those albums that I'd never listen to again even after trying to convince myself after several times of listening to them that I could ever like them. Same goes with a lot of albums and groups. Aldo Nova's single hit is just that, it has energy and drive. Do the lyrics mean anything philosophical ? Perhaps not, but these and any song gets a few minutes airplay and then we move on from them.

At this stage, the older bands have their greatest hits they play. Back in 1980 or so, Rush didn't have that, so they were 3-4 songs and done for what I would've listened to them for. I got the same feeling and sense from others at that show. Just compare them to Van Halen. I think I have one Rush album vs eight VH albums during the same time period.
