Just to be technical, it's nitrites, not nitrates; amyl nitrite is used clinically. The most common recreational formula is butyl nitrite. The whole class of compounds are called alkyl nitrites. They are esters formed by the reaction of an alcohol with nitrous acid and a catalyst. When inhaled, they cause an instant dilation of blood vessels, resulting in a dramatic, instant drop in blood pressure and increase in heart rate.
