I WEAR SOCKS WITH MY SANDALS.

Depends on the dude - a big torso stud, wearing some loose-fitting jeans, with a pair of flip flops ain't so bad. Some fat dude in line at the grocery store is a different matter -

Can't stand the 'thongs', no foot support and have tripped in them more than once (or worse is 'stepping out' of them on hot pavement, etc) so I have to wear sandals with a hell support/back for comfort.

I *do* wear some nike-type flipflops at the gym in the wet areas tho...(one case of athletes foot solved that problem!).

I'm glad someone agrees with me on this, Greek Dude! I started noticing people wearing them in all seasons and weathers (including rainy winter days) walking around town shopping etc in England. It just looks ridiculous, especially when worn with jeans.

Flip flops should only be worn at the seaside or at home on a hot day in my opinion.

Dude, where do you live? It's been like that in NY since the summer of 2004 ---- I see what you might mean about the really super cheap flip-flops (thongs, I guess), but if they're decent quality I think it's fine. I personally don't have a problelm with seeing men's feet in general unless they're gross, and I live in CA, so it's goin' on here all the time.

What is your choice of casual footwear in the warm months?

I didn't start noticing this trend until the summer of 2007.

Does anybody know why the hell this happened? If so, is there anything I can do to stop it?

. . .Please?

I have very sensitive feet so i either live in Nikes or sandals. Not the cheap sandals, but they are flippy and floppy. I'd prefer to wear Nikes all the time but sometimes im forced to not dress in sportswear and the sandals give the outfit a different look.

My daughter lives in Crocs (even in the winter with socks) because she insists on wearing them. Her feet are also sensitive and the crocs work well for that.

Hubby wears the best Roman looking sandals in the summer.

Str8hungyo: You've got that right. I use the trolley for part of my commute to work that goes through SDSU campus. I see so many students on the trolley wearing flips and sandals to school year round. I don't care about the look of it, but their feet must freeze. It's been in the low 50s when I leave for work, and I can't see how these people can deal with their feet being cold.

Otherwise, it's very convenient to put on a pair of flips to empty the trash or take a quick trip to the store. Most of the time, I wear my running shoes to keep my feet protected and warm. Most of the year I wear socks around the house because it's too cool to go bare foot.

It feels so weird. I know in other countries outside of the US they call flip-flops thongs, but in the US thongs refer to the type of underwear that hardly have more than a string in the back, that gives the girl who's wearing it a constant wedgie.

As for me, I don't like flip-flops very much. I don't like the sound, and when I tried wearing them, the feeling of my heel lifting off the ground but the footwear not moving until I lift up my feet entirely is really, really awkward.

I like sandals, though. I had this pair of black sandals, where they had this big, thick Velcro going over the top of them. They moved with my feet, and my God they were the most comfortable things in the world.

Yet, I always have this problem with sandals where no matter how comfortable they are, I can't even wear them for one whole day. They ALWAYS start digging into my feet and hurting somehow eventually. It really sucks.

my opinion is that its only appropriate for men to wear them at the beach or at home. Just a dress code , like no white pants or coats after labor day. Women have more options.
But if you choose to wear them other places, dont think that people arent looking at your feet!

In South Africa they are called slip-slops... I've never heard of them being called thongs. I suppose they have thongs (the bit that goes between the toes) but the whole item of footwear isn't a thong. You really need to wear them for a while before the thong gets softened and your feet toughen, before that they tend to be painful.
