If you have a few seconds...

i've noticed a GROSS tendency of some people on this site to make remarks. i'm guilty of this too and am constantly working on being less of a smart-ass to strangers and relegating my sarcastic humor to those who understand my quirks.

ANYWAYS, on top of that, the following groups have been generalized and attacked in one or more threads, ()s indicate the sentiment expressed against them:

-straight men (neanderthals)
-muslims (all violent, extremist terrorists)
-feminine gay men (embarressment to the gay community)
-guys who aren't comfortable with or don't understand their sexuality (in denial, conformist)
-christians (self-righteous, anti-pleasure, hypocrites)
-black men (self-victimizing, annoying, inarticulate, uneducated)
-bisexuals (greedy, unsure of what they want, confused)
-guys who enjoy suggestive pics of celebrities (desperate)
-anyone with a differing opinion (often receive personal attacks and insults)

politics, religion, and even porn and, surprize, penis size alawys start out as discussions and almost always end up with rude remarks and personal insults. anyhow, the point of this thread is to see if, in a small way, we're capable of taking the high road. if you've got a minute and a half, click on your profile, pull up the archive of your posts and if there's a recent remark you've made to someone that was intentionally cutting and disrespectful. send that person a PM apologizing for your behavior or comments. i'm going to do this because i've certainly been rude to a few members, and i'm sure this isn't going to lead to any marriages or best-friend scenarios, but it certainly won't hurt to tell anyone that you apologize for your rudeness.

i understand we're not cousins or lovers or best friends on this site, but at the worst, what will 15 seconds of apologizing to someone hurt?? especially since, call it what you want, there's a rotating door of members who get grossly insulted and leave. shouldn't big penises be bringing us together? i already know who i owe apology to, anyhow, have it guys and gals.

......i don't wanna have to eat lettuce. those stupid bags of spring mix PISS ME OFF.....

i know you've taken to wearing your father's hand-me-down anger, but i wish that you wouldn't it's a few sizes too big and everyone can see it doesn't fit you, makes you look silly, hangs loose in all the wrong places, even if it does match your skin color.....

My rudeness is ALWAYS intentional.

Please, people of LPSG, if I diss you understand that I mean it.

Don't expect an apology - even when I'm wrong.

Half of the people can be part right all of the time,
Some of the people can be all right part of the time.
But all the people can't be all right all the time
I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

I said that. [Bob Dylan]

I blame the media.

No, seriously. These groups are often portrayed as such, these traits used to make their alignments abundantly clear, in entertainment media. Then you've got the impressionable youth, they see that and act that way. Or maybe it's vice versa. Either way, a few bad apples ruin the bunch, and the entertainment industry is passing the infection around like the whore that it is.

i.e.: It's not just the site. Welcome to the world.

It’s akin to chewing on a rain soaked car tire.

Thank you, Marley!

That means a lot. I will now apologize to the boys in the Donald Faison thread for saying they were tragic for looking at pictures of his bulge! In that case I was having a little fun. There have been other threads where I was a bit snide because my cup runneth over and I didnt want to have an acute case of moderator tourettes on the open forum. My most enjoyable ribbings here however do come when I am interacting with someone who gets my humor or knows me pretty well.

Why must there always be some Pollyanna actively seeking to shoehorn the entire membership into their notion of moral congruence?

Please fuck right off.

This is EXACTLY why I continue to get pms from members who would rather just quietly slip off into the cyber night never to return than to endure one more hour of braying bravado. When you go elsewhere to complain about what has become of LPSG remember these comments.

i've also noticed a sort of high-school system of popularity. one member might as a question that's simply answered, then another member asks a similar question and the responses are cutting and rude. can't an asshole be shown the error of their self-righteous ways?? this asshole has seen the light!!!

.... What?
I was asking if he meant absolute instead of obsolete, not asking if that was meant to be a statement of absolute wisdom.

once more you are making the huge assumption that
A. stereotypes are not useful.
And
B. human beings are capable of NOT stereotyping.

You have yet to show ANY shred of proof or even analogy that those two assumptions are even remotely valid.

For example. In science biologists deal with Species.
The very concept of species is stereotype.

We are lumping a bunch of animals that each have a unique genotype into a group based upon certain shared qualities...

These qualities need not be present in every member of the group... they need only have a certain percentage of these qualities to belong to a given species.
There ARE tigers without stripes who are, nevertheless, tigers.

However, that does not mean that "stripes" is not part of the species descripotion.

In a larger sense, we can not SAY anything about Anything, without generalizing.
Einstein's laws describing Gravity are a generalization. We use them under the pure assumption that these laws are the same everywhere in the universe.
And yet we have no way of knowing that they are.

Discussions are one thing... arguments are another. Arguments imply contention and disagreement...

While I feel that ad hominems are unnecessary and less than exalted... they are bound to occur when folks with differing ideas lock horns in debate.

Its not a big deal... You do not have a right to live unoffended. If you call yourself an adult, you should be able to shrug it off.

As to your list..

Sorry
Anyone calling themselves a Chrisitan, a bisexual, Gay...
IS STEREOTYPING THEMSELVES.

THEY are the ones assuming a label that classifies them in certain ways.
They WANT people to draw certain conclusions about them based upon their self labeling.

Christians, for example, want others to believe that they are more moral, more family oriented , more trustworthy... because of their christian beliefs.

People who have self labeled get upset when other people do not make the RIGHT assumptions about them... based upon how THEY evaluate their label.

This is merely frustration that other people aren't stereotyping them in the way they PREFER.
Labeling yourself is an attempt to exert control over how others perceive you.

But others, not of your label, are gonna have their OWN ideas about the characteristics that they see in your self selected group.

Sorry Marley...
ALL christians ARE delusional. They are believing something based upon a 1700 year old book complied by folks trying to turn a superstition into a money making business.
They have zero evidence that this book is any more true than Harry Potter. Zero evidence for their imaginary sky daddy...

And they DEMAND that I take their delusion seriously and accord their delusion respect.

That is the shared characteristic that I see among the people who stick fishes on their OWN cars!

I am more than happy to defend my assumptions with actual argument and evidence... to show that I have valid REASONING behind this sterotype.

And wheter we realize it or not... whether we can admit to it or not...
we are ALL the same in this respect.

Its one of the defining traits of our species.

lol. i for one don't enjoy rolling around in mud and take NO PRIDE in being an asshole. i think doing so may be a bi-product of a generation that's raised to fight only for self-serving rights and anything that contradicts is unnecessary and irrelevant. we're all taught what rights to demand, but how many understand the RESPONSIBILITY that comes with those rights?? there isn't a single bill of rights that doesn't have some sort of balance, but it seems most people only read the part that tells them what they're entitled to.

[quote=Phil Ayesho;1471166]once more you are making the huge assumption that
A. stereotypes are not useful.
And
B. human beings are capable of NOT stereotyping.

no matter what numbers back up stereotypes about black men, i always find myself offended when they're applied to me. i doubt that i'm the only one who feels this way. phil honey i know, human nature, can't help it yadda yadda yadda but stereotypes are only useful when applied to the people who portray the stereotype. for those that don't, it's no less than prejudice.

In a larger sense, we can not SAY anything about Anything, without generalizing.

in a smaller, more realistic sense, do you not see that when stereotypes and generalizations are applied, they're often negative ones?? muslims are often categorized by the most extreme, men categorize women's sexuality according to the most brazen, unadulterated whore, black men are categorized by the uneducated, self-victimizing thug.

i've never been asked, "gee are you all as poetic as maya angelou" or "are you all as well-spoken as barack obama". it's usually "why do all black guys talk funny".

Discussions are one thing... arguments are another. Arguments imply contention and disagreement...

that's exactly what i'm NOT talking about. i'm talking about the name-calling, the personal attacks, for instance someone made several references to a cousin who molested me. a traumatizing event was used to cut me down.

Its not a big deal... You do not have a right to live unoffended. If you call yourself an adult, you should be able to shrug it off.

sounds like you're trying to justify rudeness and disrespect.

phil i often find you inquisitive and you usually make good points but i'm asking people to apologize for rude behavior, please don't turn this into a another quote-by-quote deconstruction of marleyisalegend.

i doubt anyone here cries or takes anything too personally, but is respect too much to ask for while we're on the site?? should the population be only stone-cold don't-give-a-damn outspoken people who force out everyone who doesn't want to log on and be condescended??
