it wouldn't surprise me if doctors/scientists/whoever isn't actively trying to find a cure. how much money stands to be lost if we cure aids?? do you know how much money is made on retro-viral treatments, "research", etc..!! i always find it amusing that with limited resources and information, men were able to cure polio along with many other diseases of the past and they did so without 45 million dollar labs and technological advancement. i'm not a conspiracy maniac but it's certainly worth wondering how feasible it is to ask a drug-dealer to burn every field of marjuana plants, the very thing they make their money off of.

i know you've taken to wearing your father's hand-me-down anger, but i wish that you wouldn't it's a few sizes too big and everyone can see it doesn't fit you, makes you look silly, hangs loose in all the wrong places, even if it does match your skin color.....

Me too.
But the fact that many engage in this 'he/she looks healthy' nonsense makes me more angry than anything.

Idk, it has been 30 years since the first known AIDS cases.
As I understand, there are so many mutations in HIV that a cure or even vaccine would be difficult to create. Sort of like what happened with gardasil, they would only cover so many strains.

Sorry about your aunt.

Quality of life is very important. Yes, you can die immediately in an accident or suffer for months or years with some kind of dreadful disease. But AIDS isn't the only disease that causes suffering.

I knew a man who got leukemia, went through hell with a bone marrow transplant and tons of chemo, only to die less than a year later. My grandmother suffered for months with colon cancer that spread to her liver. People with diabetes sometimes have to have limbs removed and can suffer problems with their organs.

And then there's cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, strokes, paralysis, ALS, burn victims, etc. Life can be really unfair. AIDS for the most part is a preventable disease, but some diseases we have no control over. We get some kind of weird symptom, have it checked out, and find out we have God knows what and don't have a clue how we got it.

My family history consists of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, cancer and Parkinson's disease.

i really feel for you for your losses, but that's what makes aids so upsetting a disease. there are MILLIONS of fathers, sons, cousins, co-workers, friends, mothers who have to watch their loved ones suffer, deteriorate, and die slowly because of their OWN CHOICES. no one chooses cancer (albeit smokers) but parkinson's, leukemia, etc.. are random diseases, aids for the most part is transmitted by poor choices. there are exceptions but many people get this disease by engaging in the very behaviors they're taught can cause this disease. IMO it's almost selfish to put your family through this cuz you wanted a hot rump with that guy from the bar or turned to intrevenous drugs. i'm not judging these people and certainly feel sorry for them, but someone who contracts aids because of making a bad choice are one hair away from deserving and "i told you so".

It's terrible to be afflicted with any serious or life threatening illness. And for the families involved, my heart goes out to them...we've all experienced suffering and losses in our lives.

People who get HIV/AIDS did make a bad choice in having unprotected sex or sharing needles, but I know you and I have compassion for them, even if we'd like to yell at them and say, "I told you so, I told you so." It's frustrating but we can't control people's lives. We can't tell them not to smoke, drink and drive, or who to have sex with. Life is full of choices, and it's up to each individual to decide what's best for him or her.

Maybe not straightaway but after a few weeks symptons can include:

- Fevers, sweats, headache, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes
- Increased tendancy to suffer colds for long periods of time

I've spent 4 months studying AIDS and it's just a horrible disease, ingenius in how it works but it's going to be a long time before any effective cure is established

I'm not disagreeing with you marleisalegend, but I'd like to know what a youngn' such as your self does to protect against contracting HIV?

The Greek Dude is The Greek Dude is online now

Wow, I actually got every one of those correct. It was kind of obvious that everyone would pick that the gay guy would be HIV+, but I just knew that the vast majority of HIV+ people become religious. The references to God usually give it away for me.

My personal stance has always been to act on the assumption that everybody is HIV+ and act accordingly.

Funny, I'm a motorcycle guy with two variations on the crotch rocket theme that I ride fairly aggressively on the street, and also do light racing and trackdays. I categorically refuse to do thing in bed that might - emphasis on might - make me sick or die in 10 or 20 years time. But I'll make 10 or 20 instant decisions in the course of a ride, any one of which could cripple or kill me if I got it wrong.

People's perceptions and management of risk are wildly at odds to what risk truly is. I've got a fascinating article ("The Science of Danger") downloaded from BIKE magazine, if any motorcyclists or adrenaline junkies are interested pm me off list. It's a pdf so it's not uploadable.

Cheers, Have a great weekend one and all.

very good question. i know it may not sound believable coming from somebody my age but, aside from mutual masturbation, i use condoms for literally every sexual act. my boyfriend's 30 and is starting to lose interest in sexual activity so he doesn't mind wearing a condom when i blow him, he still gets off just the same. i DEFINITELY don't sleep around, and don't do anything with somebody unless i've known them long enough to trust them in my apartment by themselves. that obviously eliminates a lot of people, but that's the point.

i don't know if people realize aids is almost like the "perfect" disease. it evolves at a rate that few diseases do which makes it that much more hard to pin down. also there's few things more damaging to the body than losing your immune system

Experience would say HELL YES. It is amazing how many people are willing to engage in risky sexual behavior without a condom.

to put it in perspective, i was speaking to one guy who said he and all his friends wore condoms ONLY when getting fucked because it's "easier to get aids in your ass than on your dick" and that aids isn't likely to be transmitted "unless someone's fluids enter your anus so fucking someone bareback is fairly safe"

the average person can't tell you what's believed to cause cancer, initial symptoms or side effects of chemo. unfortunately the same lack of knowledge applies to aids.
