i clearly did overreact, but is that so hard to expect?? how much longer am i going to have to excuse questions like "is it okay to call you nigger" "how come black guys sag their pants" "black people talk funny how come you guys don't use proper english" "why do black singers always scream and growl"
i can play that came too: "how come white people smoke meth" (this question is stupid cuz EVERY race has meth addicts)
"how come white guys always molest children" (again, every race)
"how come white people always kill anyone with different beliefs" (again, every race does this)
first of all the post is offensive in its notion that the negative images of black men's sexuality in porn might be reflective of real black men's sexuality
second, it's questions like these along with "why do black guys.." "can i touch your hair..." that have been plaguing me and many other black people our entire lives. is it too much to ask to be looked at as an individual and NOT have your opinion of me be based on rap videos, porn, and news stories about gangsters??
why didn't the OP ask if all black people are as poetic as maya angelou?? why didn't the OP ask if all black people are good singers like whitney houston??
why didn't the OP ask if all black people are as well-spoken as barack obama??
one thing i think many people are completely ignorant of is that the tendency is stronger to look at NEGATIVE behavior and ask "gee does this represent all black people?" i always ask this question: which of these headlines are more likely to be run in the morning paper and on CNN
-black author hits NY Times bestsellers list
-gang of african american thugs terrorize lower east-side
-rapper Ludacris starts foundation for underpriveleged kids in the inner-city
-rapper 50 cent pulled over, drugs and guns found
-black woman invents a hair-product that will save women 30 minutes in the morning
-black mother arrested for leaving her children in the car, heat exhaustion killed both kids
once again, i think america is completely ignorant of its tendencies to focus on NEGATIVE aspects of the black community. if i googled hiroshima, the holocaust, civil war, i could ask "geez are all white people blood-thirsty hypocrites cuz a lot of yall like killing people who's beliefs are different, but i don't because i know each individual white person is, well, an individual. i don't ask questions or base my opinions of white people on what i see in porn, movies, heavy metal music videos, or any other form of media. i don't form any opinions about ANY person until i hear them speak. however when examining the black community there's a tendency to look at the worst examples of our race and say "is everybody..... is every black person....."
this DOES go both ways. i spent many years listening to my father tell me how white people were gonna keep me down and stab me in the back but guess what. my first crush was a white girl, my BEST friends (as a gay black man) is a white christian couple. my favorite teacher in high-school was white. why is there so much color in my life and in my friends?? because i judge NOONE on any other merit than their own. |
