Americans, have you been watching England and France

I recall seeing all this rhetoric that the world hates the US, and Bush and Tony Blair were bed buddies... etc etc.. (thusly the thread).

But, did you know that England not only re-elected a like prime minister, but just recently SWEPT out parliament in the face of a more conservative old-school government.

Do you wonder why your "mainstream" media didn't report this much, but blatantly would, if the pendulum was swinging in the other direction. do you know what Sarkozy stands for. Any update on Germany?

You're told the "world" hates the America and where it's headed, yet it's closest allies seem to follow... go figure. Europeans can/should opine, if I'm missing something here...

Sarkozy is a lot more complicated than just being friendly towards America - Chirac was friendly towards America - he just happened to disagree with ending diplomatic attempts at the Iraqi situation as soon as they were ended. The other thing about France is that the majority of people here are very insular. Sarkozy is, I hope, in the process of helping France realise its true position in the world and (even more importantly) in Europe - which is more important than a lot of Americans seem to give credit for but less important than a lot of French seem to give credit for

The other thing about Sarkozy, his government, and the move to the reasonable right here that is good is that France needs to slough of some of its 20th centuary socialist ideas because they just can't do anything other than bankrupt this country with its aging population.

I guess you haven't been abroad lately and experienced america hatred first hand.....It's very uncomfortable.....the cure is to say, I did not vote for Bush...and the hatred disappears.

Friend of mine traveled to Rome right at the beginning of the war in Iraq.
She told me what transpired in Rome the day of the world wide protest against the war. A bonfire in the vicinity of Vatican Square and verbal anti American rhetoric, banners that said all manner of horrible things about America.

Since she is Italian American, she said they decided to tell no one she was from the states. The fear of being throw into the bonfire crossed her mind several times the hate was so bad.

This is not a pretty state of affairs no matter how you slice it.

But seriously folks, Blairs New Labour was so close to a conservative administration that it's really not fair to say that the Brits have voted for a more conservative govt. If anything, it may be the start of a conscience vote swing away from an administration that got them into the Iraq mess, amongst other issues.

80% of the Italian population opposed the war while Smilin' Silvio was standing shoulder to shoulder with The Shrub. A similar situation occured in Spain.

Turkey actually listened to it's population, refused to allow the US to stage part of the attack from Turkey and was then accused of anti-democratic behaviour?!?

Actually, NO.

They were not Parliamentary (MP) elections. They were local council elections. Typically they're a mid term referendum on the sitting administration. It's not a new Government, genius but a change in 450 local councils.

When trying to make a clever post about something you clearly and demonstrably know little, it helps to get at least some of the facts right.

I'm a bit confused about what you say here faceking, the last time that England elected a Prime Minister was in 2005 (Tony Blair).
Gordon Brown, our present PM, was elected Prime Minister not by General Election, (by the English and UK populace), but by the Labour Party as Tony Blair had set a date to stand down.

Also, our Government remains the same, still Labour, although what I think you are referring to is our recent Local Elections in which the Conservatives fared very well indeed.....but these were not governmental elections, rather elections for seats within Local Councils.

How this reflects on which party wins the next general election (due within 2 years), is anyone's guess.

I actually quite like Boris. He will surely be catastrophic as Mayor though.

Gordon Brown was elected leader of the Labour Party by the party itself.
There have been no parliamentary elections, and there doesn't seem to be much likelihood of an election this year.
The recent elections that did occur were on the municipal level, and did indeed smile upon quite a number of Conservative candidates.
But that doesn't imply any collective warming towards American foreign policy or the Bushian legacy.
