They were Local Governement elections in the UK, like your local Mayor and Sheriff or whatever, NOT Parliamentary elections. When these happen mid term the encumbant Government always runs the risk of getting its ass kicked. In this case the Socialist (ha ha) Labour Party deserved it for several reasons.

One thing I've noticed while abroad is that people often seem to soften to me when I say I'm a Canadian.
They've usually been assuming I'm an American, since we Canucks are on the whole indistinguishable from our Yankee cousins, apart from being house-broken and wearing underwear.

Edit: I don't want to exaggerate this. I know that most people have no problem with the American citizenry ... merely with some of their governments.

What qualifies as a conservative overseas and what qualifies as a conservative here in the States are two entirely different things.


Here in the states you have to be a certifiable idiot to qualify as a conservative... driven by fear... lacking any individual conscience...following the party dogma as if it is scripture... and pandering to scripture as if its NOT delusional. Unable to deal with new information or adapt to a changing world.
(BTW- this is not opinion... this is what a recent scientific study of conservatives versus liberals found to be reliably true... COnservatives are more fearful, less able to effectively deal with new information and more likely to parrot the ideas of leaders than to form their own opinions based upon their own thoughts.)

Used to be being conservative meant you believed in a SMALLER US government. LESS government intrusion into the private sector.

Today... the 12 year Republican congress and 7 year republican presidency has resulted in bloated government.
A wider gap between rich and the rest of us... Government surveillance of it citizenry...Unprecedented deficits... dissolution and dissipation of our military...
...cronyism, Rampant corruption, erosion of basic freedoms and rights, contravention of the US constitution, the creation of the USA's first Gulag.
