If I start an argument with you, dear Rubi, and am deeply insulting, imo, anything you say either in retaliation or defense is mitigated by your right to defend yourself. We are not both equally guilty.
But this rule simply touches on where you can make your retaliation.

I agree, but that doesn't mean a new thread for that specific purpose should be tolerated.

True enough, but the clearest of them ... those that from the opening post have the intention of attacking a member, and never mind the reason ... should be disallowed from the outset.

Actually, that sounds more emphatic than I wish to be.

But to set a policy of not allowing such threads is entirely justiable.

And that policy, once established, should be enforced consistently, as far as that's possible.

That's all I'm saying.

(And Drifter, I love any and all pain you send my way ... but you knew that.)

This site take's more turns than a june bug with his ass on fire.

A tear to your eye, Rubi

So when someone is abusive in Chat, it shouldn't be discussed elsewhere?

When someone is abusive via PM it shouldn't be discussed elsewhere?

Is it paradoxical or ironic that the good reasons to live are also our good reasons to die?

I think the best road to take in matters such as this is to hit the post alert button and get in touch with a mod. Give them a chance to respond. They have lives too. Since ive been here if i ever had a question or a problem logging in (or anything else) they have always gotten back to me. Even Rob E. They will respond if you give them a chance.

Okay, good points.
I mean when something happens in a thread, no ancillary thread should be started up in retaliation.
The original thread provides all the needed public exposure.
That wouldn't be true of things said in Chat (in which the train of remarks quickly disappears) or in PMs (which are seen only by the recipient).

I'm sure that Canadians have even more that they could teach me.

I could argue that DragonFly's thread was not about retaliation, there was plenty of that in the original thread.

It was rather a discussion potentially about the boundaries of personal abuse that are tolerable on this site. If we have that discussion, then names will be named as they are in the sticky PM thread in the women's section.

I thought the guy was going to calm down, but then he just seemed to lose it completely. Then he came back and started again (twice), so two definite violations.

I am absolutely not having a go at the Mods, but I think we should have the freedom of speech to express our views on other people's unacceptable behaviour. The case in point was clearly unacceptable.

If his case is Sub Judice, then so be it, but when the Mods have decided what they wish to do, then I believe we should be allowed to discuss it.

Finally, as in the freedom of the Press, I think it is in the Community's interest to have this type of abuse brought to the widest audience's attention.

Is it paradoxical or ironic that the good reasons to live are also our good reasons to die?

Chat - report it to a mod with screep capture- we can't just take your word for it. I did that once and it was a mistake.

PM - report/forward to a mod, preferably with screen capture

While I am in favour of the name and shame for things that would otherwise remain hidden this instance wasn't hidden.

When it happens in a thread it should be discussed in that thread.

Three hours prior to the start of the removed thread the OP was informed that; yes, the reports had reached us and had been merged to consolidate the evidence and objections, yes, I was making my own recommendation as we spoke, and yes, I would be leaving a comment to the objectionable poster in the original thread itself, which I did.

Three hour prior.
It wasn't started due to lack of moderator involvement or attention.

Apparently the actions visible didn't sit close enough to her desire for a quick kill so she started a thread dedicated to having him banned.

Four hours later I saw it and it's whopping two supporting posts and removed it.

Repeating my original post.
It's harassment. Don't do it.

The best a man can get.
