Erection! Manual Labor or Uncontrollable Phenomenon?!

I just want a small poll to see where I myself fit; the question is simple: Do you, more often, have to actually masturbate to attain an erection or do you have them just from thought / visual stimulation / etc. without touching your own penis?

Now, I am sure there are those who can orgasm as such, but for this excercise an 'erection' is defined as a penis that is about 80% hard; so if you're not exactly at that max point it's okay, but you do have to get there most of the way.

Reason I ask: I am actually finding it harder and harder to attain erections without touching my own penis; not neccessarily public news, but if it's not the norm I'd seek to correct it because while I like not having erections in public I don't like the fact that I don't have random erections, and to my knowledge I don't have night erections either. I'm young ( don't do any substances, etc. ), so, that should not be the case.

I'm 35 and i still cant control when i get an erection. I had to go see my gp a few weeks ago and she had to examine my penis. As much as i tried to control it, up he pops. I apologised and she was all professional about it and i got a bit embarrassed but i couldn't help it.
