None, and this is actually what people misquote. People use "HIV" as an excuse for their circumcision, and as it's been said in studies: this has the potential to be dangerous misinformation.

Well, i'm a teenager (18) that has grown up in America in the late 20th century. I've only ever known ONE other guy that wasn't cut at birth, and nearly every girl that's brought it up (both in real life and on television, if you'll pay attention) has said that she prefers cut, because all of the guys they've been with are, in fact, cut. Go to any American high school for the past 40 years and see for yourself how many guys are cut, and how many aren't.


I choose not to side with either extreme in any situation, and choose to see my own view through it. I've begun to realize that both sides in any political, religious or medical (which circumcision happens to be all three) debate tend to spread misinformation to prove themselves right.

Yeah, let's see - they don't have condoms so let's hope they are proficient at outpatient surgery???? We could air drop pallets of condoms over the whole continent for the price of cutting all of them now and in future. Doesn't make any sense other than from a money angle. I think Bill Gates is already financing genital cutting in Africa.

Yeah, that's pretty weird isn't it. It depends on where you're raised nowadays. Midwest and South are still the highest regions for genital cutting if I remember right. The coasts are both lower, especially the west coast and southwest.

Don't get me wrong. I agree with you - I was just pointing out the reasons why Africa had been singled out by the pro-cutters.

The biggest problem is (apparently) getting them to use the damned things, even if they are provided. They are also not, it was claimed, very good at storing them properly or using them effectively. Personally I would have thought that some good quality training would, at least, help improve the situation.

As for suggesting that they are not proficient at outpatient surgery - many, many African tribes do practise circumcision, without anaesthetic. Nelson Mandela tells the story of his circumcision, aged about 12, when he and some of the other young boys were prepared for the tribal ritual and they were cut in front of the whole village. It seems pretty barbaric to us - but to them it's a big cultural event.
