Fooey with surround sound. I'm not buying into some gimmick to sell more (cheap) speakers. I went with the traditional 3-way floor standing stereo speakers.

I only have but 2 ears, and my living room isn't so big. CDs are only stereo, so why not? Every few years, yet another standard. Do the manufacturers of all that stuff, just think we are made of money?

I don't want to pretend that my living room is the movie theater. It's not, and I'm fine with that. The only "HD" I get on my HD 27-inch heavy tube TV full-screen, is what I snatch on its bunny ears for free. There's digital signals now in the area, but sometimes the old analog stations come in better, sometimes the digital better. Sony Playstation 2, doesn't do HD, neither do standard DVDs.

Hey, I get the big sound and deep bass, what more could I possibly need?

I think I figured out why my 12-inch woofers just don't seem to move much. Because I don't like to crank the volume up. Even with it low, I can feel the floor move, when the ship on Titanic groans under the weight of the water. I don't want to blow out my ears, nor become completely unaware of outside environmental sounds, nor so shake the house that the nails pull out of the floor?

Good speakers don't need to be loud, to sound great. They sound great soft as well.

I love it!

I've got a 7.3 system and it blows the windows out. I'm an HT geek.

You don't need Blu-Ray to get 7.1. Any regular DVD encoded for 7.1 can deliver the same thing and most 7.1 decoders can matrix a reasonably good 7.1 from simple 5.1 material.

really, me too. I've got a 500w polk sub, bose cube satellites, and a modded H/K reciever. On the H/K I modded the lights to a nice soft red, they look much better while the movie is playing than the bright blue. And a recent purchase, a sony 42" LCD w/ glass touch panel buttons. I'm waiting to get my hands on some DTS-HD MA footage just to put it to the test.

I just naturally assume that minimally 5:1 surround theatre experience is used with HDTV ?

A classic case of ass/u/me.

Not necessarily true. The content first has to be encoded for 5.1 sound. If the original source (TV show or movie) isn't encoded for 5.1 then the broadcaster or network distributes content in the original format. Casablanca was recorded in monaural so if it's distributed in HD then, naturally, the sound is sent to your home as monaural. On occasion, soundtracks are remastered from monaural or stereo into 5.1 or better (Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars, etc.), and in those cases you'd get surround sound of a sort. The sad part is even content originally mastered in 5.1 or better won't necessarily be broadcast in its native format. Sometime broadcasters save bandwidth by not using 5.1 and downconvert 5.1 soundtracks to stereo. Not all HD content (think newscasts) is created in a native 5.1 format. Much is still stereo at best.

Right now it's all a crap shoot. Premium channels usually broadcast exclusively in HD/5.1 but again, older content which wasn't originally mastered in 5.1 nearly always won't be remastered to 5.1.

not so much the tv, but DTS. is the best when i have my music dvd's on.
bring the sound alive. 5.1 DTS.
all the blu-ray stuff would be ok if all the films was re-mastered, and not just tranfaird to the disc's from the dvd masters as thay are at the moment.
all that does, is show how grainy thay are. and not TRUE HD.

Not to knock you man, but could you please take some effort to post intelligibly?

I have Dobly TrueHD 7.1 sound system that has broken my ex-gf's "precious moments" figurines. I also have a 100" LCD Projector and a 32" LCD HDTV.

Sure it might not matter to some, but to me my high quality A/V gear is as important to some guy's tweaked hot-rod or some womans Italian shoes.

We all have our weaknesses.

as far as I'm concerned, 5.1 and 7.1 are a disappointment. very few films have sound properly mixed for the medium. and hearing all dialog from the front system isn't reality, either.

While agree that not all releases use the system to it's full potential. What you might consider a "properly mixed" film or TV might simply not be the way the audio designer intended it to be.

The satellite speakers are there to immerse and not to stand out on their own.

I can therefore deduct that the typical audio designer isn't much of a mixing engineer if that's what he turns out??

Or maybe you should watch programs other than Flavor of Love and Dancing With the Stars to see something that is properly mixed.
