He's an incredible musician, hottest Latin performer on the planet and most likely the most photogenic human to be captured on film and video in a looooooong time. And the man can move! However, I live in Spanish language cultures and can understand why he probably doesn't appeal to the Ted Nugent, Guns and Roses, Walyn Jennings, and KISS sets.
Seeing this guy perform live up close and out of doors is rather amazing. He never seems to run out of breath. Kiki rules!
Edit: And thanks, cinnamon (buns) for the link to his foundation. Do Guns and Roses have a foundation? Or are they just participating one of several 12-step programs offered by foundations? Just asking.

| | | He's impossibly beautiful, and moves impossibly well, and sings quite well enough, in my opinion.
I don't have a single CD of his. In some ways my appreciation is academic.
But I've known people who worked in hotels in which he stayed on tour, and they found him reticent but very very respectful, and not at all over-impressed with his star power.
In fact, when the camera is not on him, or he's not on stage, he apparently can entirely drop the star persona thing.
When I see him, I always wind up asking myself, "Just what would it be like to be so perfect, from certain perspectives?" The chin cleft. The facial symmetry. The balance in the body. The bodacious physique. The energy. The ability to find the gesture of ultimate cool.
It's funny. He doesn't interest me that much. (I know that sounds contradictory.)
For me, he has little resonance.
But that's what creates what interest I have.
What is it like to be so damn beautiful ... and wondering what draws people forward, apart from the cheek bones, the perfect hair, the blazing eyes.
Is it lonely to be there?
Are you lonely even with someone who's been drawn forward by the cheek bones, the perfect hair, the blazing eyes? Is it wonderful to be there? Or is it hell? That's what I think about every time I see him. Sour grapes? I don't know.

| | | Senor Rubirosa, your response just simply blew me away! You captured the strange duality which accompanies fame, looks and talent. I feel much the same way about Ricky Martin (and a lot of other similarly situated celebrities), but I could never have expressed it as profoundly as did you. Thanks for the insight. | | | |

Flame on. | Tis be true, but why let one incident over shadow his work he has done through the Ricky Martin Foundation? Speaking up against the sex slave trade, rallying for better life for children...

Flame on. | He later publicly turned against Bush on account of the Iraq war.
In one song, Asigniture Pendiente, he has one line about the "photo with Bush."
Singing it onstage in Puerto Rico, he gave the finger salute during that phrase.
He was criticized (and praised) for that, but released a statement to the press that read: "My convictions of peace and life go beyond any government and political agenda and as long as I have a voice onstage and offstage, I will always condemn war and those who promulgate it".
