Well, I'm Irish and not Scottish, but I personally don't see anything wrong with them.

I think it's more appropriate for men to wear some knickers underneath though I recognize that's not the custom.

I'm fine with kilts, I mean I don't wear them (not so common in germany;)) but I have no problem with people wearing them. Who really can say something against it?

But I imagine it as a sort of strange to see a woman wearing a kilt... kind of ironic, isn't it?

Goodlooking guy in that kilt pic. Shame he's got it on back to front.

I think kilts are incredibly sexy! They need to bring them over to the US!

You are not going to walk down Princes Street (Edinburgh) and see most Scots men in kilts. Kilts are mainly worn in the following circumstances:
1) As formal, evening wear (with a dinner jacket), and at formal occasions such as weddings.
2) By Scottish rugby and football supporters.
3) By some Scottish regiments as formal uniform.
4) By bands (in Northern Ireland as well as in Scotland).
5) By some men in the Highlands of Scotland as working clothes. If the mud is thick a kilt stays cleaner than trousers.
Most Scottish men will wear a kilt at some time during their life. Kilt wearing is probably increasing.

Traditionally men wore nothing under a kilt. For that matter traditionally men wore nothing under their trousers. In the first world war (and presumably all earlier conflicts) the kilted regiments (Scottish and Irish) had no underwear. As some of the poison gasses used in the first world war were found to do horrible things to a man's nether regions the kilted soldiers were issued with something akin to briefs, which were to be pulled on if there was a gas attack. They weren't for regular wear.

Today most kilt wearers probably wear something underneath. It's not that warm in Scotland!

It might not be that warm in Scotland, but it is under a kilt. If you've got eight yards of 13-ounce fabric wrapped around you, the last thing you're going to be is cold. If anything, you'll be too warm. The only bit of you that's likely to feel cold at all is your knees. I've been out in my kilt, socks and a shirt in the middle of winter with snow on the ground and not felt cold.

Off on a slight tangent, it's even warmer when the kilt is wet. Wool is about the only fabric that has better insulating qualities when wet than it does when dry. OK, it weighs twice as much, but that helps build up your leg muscles.

Could be the next fad in summer clothing here in the U.S. if they made a lightweight version. The increased ventilation would be appreciated on a hot day.
