Why? That's odd isn't it?

I disagree jewelry is inappropriate early on or as a 'just because gift.' Whereas flowers are quite acceptable.

Most of the older non-hybrid roses smell delightful as for preferring animal toys. I sometimes forget just how young you are . . .

I know you said thank you.

Flowers don't say that. How about a Speidel ID bracelet.

IMHO:
red roses signify love
yellow roses signify friendship
white roses signify death - they are usually used for funeral arrangements and for mothers day corsages if your mother is deceased
pink roses are pretty and good for birthdays

I got a rose bush in a pot once. I thought that was neat. I am not a fan of cut flowers, though. I think that many things are appropriate for Valentine's Day. I would much prefer perfume, jewelry, lingerie, or a number of things, to flowers. Flowers seem like an unimaginative gift.

Also, anything but red roses on Valentine's day says to me he either forgot the holiday was coming up or is to cheap to pay Valentine's Day prices. Before you guys get upset, I agree that the floral industry raises prices unnecessarily at this time of year. Since it is often the only day of the year many of you give flowers I don't think it's that big a deal.

Perhaps, but (and this isn't about the inflated costs, which is irrelevant) don't you think the cop out 'De Rigeur' Red Rose(s) - while nice enough are somewhat indicative of a startling lack of well...imagination?

The same could be said for the chocolates and those God awful squishy bears - wouldn't something, anything indicating original thought and thus genuine affection be at least as welcome?

Sometimes convention is just convention, isn't it?

My faves are yellow lilies and narcissus... so I guess no hidden message other than "I was thinking of you, here's proof!!". :)

NJQT,

I think it really depends upon the man. Where as most folks dont know and probably dont care what the colors of flowers and their implications to the recipient mean, The sender of those roses was pretty savvy about such things. He was definitely a man of detail .Though most are not , there are those who are still into such things and I suppose would rather send a subtle message.
Personally, I think a box of red roses is over priced and smacks of lack of imagination. I think we have to observe the individual and see what their love language might be. From the right person a hand written card with a poem created just for me would mean so much more than a box of obscenely priced red roses. Besides, I do agree that certain things are inappropriate too soon in a relationship and they cant be pushed.

LOL! I take a few of these to spread the wealth around! LOL! Though I express my opinion here when faced with a box of roses I am always quite delighted and go out of my way to express my gratitude. The person didnt have to think about me at all...
