Defining Music for a generation

I listened to people like the Gratefull dead since I was 9 till about 29. Names like Garcia and Slick defined my generation for a generation. What music today still can define a generations music or politics for a decade or two? I played Verdi for dinner tonight but thats not the question. Who dominates in that field for todays generation? I came up with this while listening to ---------- on SNL tonight. Boy they Sucked!

The world moves faster than it did in the heyday of the Grateful Dead.

There is no defining music, sadly. Product is king in today's musical world. There are always interesting artists cropping up, but none of them are popular on the scale of rappers and hip hop crap. Electronic music might actually follow rap and hip hop.

That whole "product is king" thing makes me want to cry. It's easier than before to make it as a band. There shouldn't be music to hate - either like it or don't - but I really think that hate is appropriate to describe the way I feel for certain "musicians" *gag*.

Maybe I'm being a snob but I don't appreciate a lot of current music as being music.

There has generally been at least two major musical movements or styles that define a decade. There was in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and yes, even the 1990s. However, this has failed to happen in the 2000s decade.

I believe the reason is the increasing corporate dominance of radio, and media generally. There are fewer and fewer independent outlets that play "risky" (as in not guaranteed to be "commercial" enough to sell...) music. This saddens me. There is actually good music being performed now, and good new bands. You just won't hear most of them on the radio. A few good bands do break through, but not very many.

I just mean music created for money's sake, not music created for music's sake. I don't consider Rap as music but more like spoken art, or maybe a collaboration between the two... And in that case, if it's about the money, add it to my "hate" list.

If you want less commercial rap that may have some sort of poetic value, check out slam. Even famous slam poets aren't corporate sponsored.

I feel sorry for this generation that in the future the music that defines their generation will be emo.

Thanks, I'll check that out! I love rappers who have a real way with words.
