How can I tell?

A really close friend of mine are both on our college swim team. And to make things even more amazing, he's very muscular, just a hot looking guy in general. Well seeing as i'm closeted it makes things harder but i'm wondering if he's gay or not. I can't really tell because he really shows no preference either way. He's never had a girl friend or anything, and he somewhat flirts with me every now and then. He could just be a good friend and all who's shy, but i'm not sure. What do you all think?

Since your good friends. Plan an evening with just you and your friend. Have him over to watch a movie. Get a movie with a sub-plot involving some gay characters. While watching the movie let him know that you think gay dudes are cool and that it wouldn't bother you if one your best friends told you he was gay. That will take the ice off, and maybe, just maybe, you'll find an even better relationship with your friend.

I forgot the best part. If he tells you he thinks having a gay friend would be cool too. Then right then and there, go up to him and kiss him. No hestitation on your part, just do it. Since you said he hasn't had any girlfriends he seems to be shy. To get you both over the hurdle, take things into your own hands, and just kiss him. Look him straight in the eyes, and just lay one on him. Not a quick kiss either, but a nice one. One that he will remember.

Totally get him over some night when no one else is around... hang out, get a few movies, not necessarily movies with gay characters, but movies that have some intense sex scenes, or even better, flip on some porn on tv after a bit...

Say something like "Jeeze man, I think i might have to get off soon this is pretty hot"... see how he reacts, if he agrees and says he needs to also.. wait a few minutes and plainly put your hand down ur pants infront of him... he'll prob follow suit, if he's getting the point ur trying to make, and he's actually gay or whatever, he'll do it

play with urself for a bit... if he does follow, ask him if he minds if u do it right infront of him, and start taking it out... if u made it this far, he prob won't mind... and ur set from there... good luck, let us know what happens!

That's exactly what happened to me and my friend. It was a little different though. He stayed over because we were getting up early the next morning for an early drive to a theme park. So the night before we were watching movies. I popped in a porn, started rubbing my bulge, and he did the same. Then he said "Do you just wanna jerk?" And we both whipped them out.
