I love fit guys. Michalangelo's STATUE OF DAVID is the perfect guy. Right offhand, the guys that I think of from LPSG are Industrialsize, Monster, and Muscled Surfer as the type of guys that are most appealing to me. Please note: I did not intentionally leave out any of you other guys that are mega hot (there are many of you!); I'm using these 3 as an example. A blend of a gym rat and a triathlete is the ideal look. Even the guys that are crazy muscle bound only look that way when they are pumped up for a competition. Having been into working out and fitness, I know how much work and discipline it takes to get and maintain a hard body.

for me its average-thin and toned, actual muscle can look hot but not really top of my lust list, or something I would want for myself I don't think

Even your "just right" guy I would like to have a little more body fat. Just a little. Actually, the just right and the bodybuilding probably aren't extremely different-- as Jovial said, bodybuilders flex and pump and all that junk to look huge.

I've said before, there's a lot to be said about proportion, and looking good is always working with what you've got. That's one thing that is somewhat missing from popular dialogue about the human body (especially women) is the fact that not everyone is built the same and working with what you've got is the healthiest thing to do.

I've been attracted to men who are naturally stocky, though I just can't get with the guys who are wider than they are tall. I have two friends who are personal trainers and they are both in top shape, but they look extremely different. One has a naturally very slight build, and he's a small, slender guy. The other is not much taller but he's got a big build-- and he's huge. He's got massive shoulders and a massive chest and has balanced that out with powerful thighs and calves. With them it's not about being in shape, it's body type. I think I prefer somewhere in the middle.

I look at the body-builders with mixed feelings (something I have been thinking on lately as I map out fitness goals for 2008). I think it might have something to do with male vs. female perceptions of why men bulk up or manipulate what their bodies look like. For instance, many of the women seem to believe that a man that puts a lot of work into his body really is going to be an asshole or someone who won't pay any attention to them.
Honestly, I like a man with hobbies. I also like a man who is able to stay committed to something, so I've never felt that way. Some men do get caught up in their appearance in an unhealthy way the same way women can. But it's not part and parcel of being into working out.

I know some gay men that think the same way, strangely enough. In fact, a good friend of mine (who is constantly trying to get my partnered off to someone..LOL) says he prefers his partner (5 years together) to have a bit of padding on them and NOT be into working out, so he won't leave. LOL...seriously, he was only partially joking here. I would, politely, ask those of you in this camp if there any sort of insecurities or concerns at work here?
For me, no. My husband started working out about a year ago, and I like that he gets some attention from other women (and men). I wish he'd get a haircut, but that's beside the point. I like it when men I'm with look good. It makes me feel good.

I like a man that puts work into his body, with a powerful build. He doesn't have to be Fitness model perfect (hell, my own body fat is greater than 10 %), but I like to have something substantial and firm to hold.
This is interesting because it's something that comes up between my husband and I. I actually think that 10% body fat is too lean for my tastes. This is totally throwing a number out there, but I think I prefer closer to 13-15%. If he had his way he'd have 0% body fat and be built out of pure granite.

I am kinda rambling, but I will say this: You could be right about the guy that works out being an asshole...but you might stop to think about why each individual guy works out. The answer will tell you a lot about if he is going to be an asshole or not :)
I agree with this completely.

I'm inclined to agree. I think Jovial is pretty hot.

I don't know if in real life that guy would be soft. I dated a guy who was built that way and he was all angles and muscles and bones. Not that it was a bad thing, though. He was actually pretty fucking hot.

Actually, these are some examples of what I like in a man ideally. The first one is build very similarly to my husband except that my husband is a little broader in the shoulders and narrower in the hips:

This guy is pretty hot, maybe a litte too skinny:

But this is all conjecture, I've never been one to throw a guy out of bed for not having a perfect body.

I am a bit of a musclophile (new word!) so I tend to like the guys who are a little overdeveloped...especially in the upper body.

If we're talking "perfect" then of course someone with nice, proportionate definition is desired, but for one's (my) own tastes...it doesn't really matter the size.

Somebody call me?

(Okay, my body's a bit thinner than the original, but it's just because so much meat went elsewhere.)

What I'm wondering is if you guys and gals out there think there's such a thing as too fit or too muscular on a man.

Personally, I don't go for the bodybuilder type at all. I don't find a man who is all cut, shaved, and oiled to be at all attractive. To me, there's definitely such a thing as too skinny, too muscular, or a combination of both. I also don't like the football player look-- that's way too bulky to me.

I like men who are fit but I do like them to have a little body fat as well. It depends on the person and their proportions, but in general there are a lot of men who get too extreme with the bodybuilding and look like a circus act.

So can a man bee too muscular? Too skinny?

Well yea...to a degree; and U say so.
I natural with my body built ...I guess
neck=16
chest= 42
fairly long 36" muscular arms
waist 34
heavy in ass & thighs (having to take pants in a 37/38 to fit pretty good..
as do many blk. men) Sum built with heavy hips like a bitch
But I do have a good manly triangular built...never done any body building
with weights...just ridin horses, farm work & loading dock work
Do I fit yo image...all natural... baby!

I like to look at men or women who are physically fit--I find them sexy. I also don't like to look at extremely muscular bodies because they don't look natural and were created with the help of steroids.

Adding some muscle mass is possible for women, but they can't bulk up like men because unlike men their bodies produce small amounts of testosterone.

Great questions, Snoozan. I think the overall appearance is a combination of proportions and more. Different people look different with different builds--not all guys look "right" muscular and/or skinny.

Muscles are nice but I also can appreciate a guy with padding as well (as you can tell from my hubby). I can like looks such as The Rock, Goldberg, the men from World's Strongest Man, to some guys with swimmer's build.

I am 6'2" and about 205 now (with some middle padding). Some consider me to be muscular, while some say I'm skinny.

As a rule, I have never found especially thin men (or women for that matter) to be very attractive to me. In a man, I like to know that he is strong and beefy.

Too skinny or too muscular, as many have said here yes. You have to feel somewhat sorry for those walking skeletons who look as though they have been purposely starved. On the other extreme, I can't figure out these bodybuilders. Sure they look impressive in the poses and it sure it takes a lot of work, but if you've ever watched one of these folks walk it almost looks uncomfortable. Sure some will say that the guy can't get big enough but it gets expensive when you can't find off-the-rack clothing and have to have everything custom tailored. Even jeans.
