Great Sci-Fi Movies

Big fan of Sci-Fi movies, but there haven't been any really great sci-fi movies of late...the last one I saw was 'Sunrise', which was okay to begin with but I felt slightly disappointed with the last half of the movie.

I was wondering what people like in the genre, and whether or not anyone knows of any upcoming sci-fi movies, or if anyone has any suggestions on any books or graphic novels being made into movies? Or any general discussion on the genre.....

New Star Trek movie

The ones that stand out for me are:

Creature From the Black Lagoon (1950s)
Since the first time I saw it when I was little, I ALWAYS felt sorry for the creature.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Alien
(Even though I'd already read the book, the 1st time seeing this in the theater when it first came out......the subliminal suggestion they used had me physically "tied up in knots" for hours.)

Star Trek IV - Voyage Home (we called it Whale Trek)

(Original) Frankenstein

Young Frankenstein

Dracula 1979 (Frank Langella)

And is it me, or have they not shown very many horror movies on tv or cable, considering it's October ?

(I'm sure I'll think of more movies to list here later)

edit:
I checked out your Star Trek movie link.....Eric Bana's to be the villain in the new movie.....that should be interesting.

Hell...I could be here for days!

No one mentioned the original Star Wars (shame on you), so I'll do it.

Krull (not "the Conquerer")...the Original with the five-bladed star!

Clash of the Titans

The Last Starfighter

I'll have more to add later.

The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Alien/s (I prefer the second)
The Thing (based on John W. Campbell's "Who goes there?")
2001
Blade Runner (based on Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids dream of electric Sheep?)
Star Wars Trilogy
and the best: Metropolis (Fritz Lang)

Krull was good. I am Ergo the Magnificent, short of stature, long of vision.
Not only that, it featured a before fame Robbie Coltrane and Liam Neeson.

Sci-Fi Channel's Dune and Children of Dune

Metropolis - I have a statue of the robot in my house.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Mysterious Island

H.G. Wells The Time Machine (The original)

Bladerunner

Silent Running

2001: A Space Odyssey

The Indiana Jones Series

E.T.

The Day The Earth Stood Still

Mysterious Planet

This is very close to what I would pick, merc. Although, I like Alien #1 the best, I think it is really just "Jaws In Space". (Edit: I don't know what I mean by "just". Jaws is a classic formula for scary movies.)

I would add The Day The Earth Stood Still, for nostalgic reasons, having saw it as a young and impressionable kid. I can still say, "Gort! Klaatu barada nikto", with enough conviction to stop the robot.

Since Dracula is on some lists, I have to add, Shadow of a Vampire. Although I don't consider vampire movies as science fiction.

Sorry everyone I neglected to add my own list!!

'Solaris' must be my all time favourite, the George Clooney remake wasn't bad either.

The original 'Planet of the Apes', still a jaw dropping and strangely moving ending.

Of course Alien 1 and 2...on most peoples lists.

And 'Galaxy Quest' was just hilarious...Sigourney Weaver flipping out over repeating the computer.....classic!

Invaders from Mars - 1953, one of my all-time favs.

Forbidden Planet - one of the best ever made.

The Andromeda Strain (GREAT Robert Wise movie from 1970)

The Matrix Trilogy (and the Animatrix as well)

Ghost in the Shell

Blade Runner (can't wait for the 5-disc ultimate edition coming out soon)

Metropolis

Solaris (remake)

WILD PALMS (Oliver Stone "cyberpunk" miniseries from early 90's)

Dune and Children of Dune from scifi network, as well as Lynch's Dune (with reservations on all 3)

2001: A Space Odyssey

A Clockwork Orange

Alien Aliens, and Alien 3 (forget the 4th one)

Gojira (the 1st, before American distributors added Raymond Burr)

Five Million Years to Earth (Quatermass and the Pit)

Minority Report

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Dark City

Forbidden Planet (I have a model of the SpaceCruiser c-57d off eBay. 28" in diameter!)

The Gamera (Hesei period, late 90's) Trilogy, forget anything you know of those terrible kiddie Gamera flicks from the 60's.... this one was totally revamped would probably have to be some of the best examples of monster movies ever, especially from Japan. Great effects, characterizations, acting. 3 movies: Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Gamera: The Battle of Legion, and Gamera: The Revenge of Iris.
