I have only met two people from LPSG in person, but have plans to meet up with a couple of others. The people that I'm close to from LPSG are searchable because I know things about them, as they know things about me. We have sent presents for birthdays and holidays, we talk on the phone, etc. By knowing where they work, live, phone numbers, and on and on, we can Google each other and find things, so I know that they are for real, as they can do for me and find the same thing.

People who are unhappy and looking for love will do the wildest things, which is what happened to all those people in the article. Truly sad and frightening!

Yup, I've met up with two LPSGers too, and it's been great. But then, we were all honest and up front about ourselves from the beginning.

It's good to be cautious, and this story does serve as a good warning, but the "internet-as-demon" idea has been beaten to death. The only time we ever hear about an internet meeting, it's always something awful along these lines. Meetings and infatuations go wrong in real life as well. Remember the Jenny Jones show, where a gay guy revealed that he had a crush on his straight friend, and later the straight friend killed him? Does this mean that all straight men are looking for a gay man to kill? Does it mean that being on TV makes you a killer? That the internet is responsible, is just as ridiculous of an idea. The internet may provide the vehicle for people to come to a bad end, but when it does, there's got to be an underlying issue. People don't suddenly become killers, predators, or molesters, from sitting down at a keyboard. Bad things aren't confined to the internet. On the good side, there 1,000s of people meeting via the internet every day, for a variety of reasons. There are whole industries based on this idea, ranging from just plain sexual hookups (gay.com, AdultFriendFinder), to marriage (match.com, eharmony.com), with countless happy meetings daily. If there wasn't a significant degree of success with these, they wouldn't continue to thrive. The internet CAN be a dangerous place, but have you taken a look at the "real" world?
