Adam of the bible story "Adam and Eve" had a first wife, Lilith. Lilith and Adam were created at the same time out of dirt, unlike Eve who was created from Adam's rib (showing Adam's dominance). Lilith vanished when Adam refused to let her be on top during sex, claiming that missionary was the only way. Lilith then became a demon, and Eve was created. Lilith turned into a succubus, seducing men in their sleep and spreading disease, and killing infants. Any crib death used to be blamed on Lilith, hence the song "Lulaby" translating into "Lilith be gone." Adam and Eve was also a pre-existing Sumarian legend, where mankind was created by a snake god, which explains the snake. No, the snake does not represent the devil in Adam and Eve, it is common that gods of previous religions get portrayed as demons and tempters in the new religion. |
