Yes, I feel the "pop" in the initial stages. It's one of my favourites parts. I can see what you mean about excess lube taking that sensation away as once we're going and even more lube is produced the sensation is lessened.

Huh -- this is a big issue, mainly because no matter how slowly I go, no matter how lubed up, I have a feeling it hurts for most girls (in fact, the last ex even discussed the issue with her gyno, who was rather amazed by the stretch marks).
