FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has released to the media and on its Web site a list of suggested charities to help the storm’s hundreds of thousands of victims. The Red Cross is first on the list.
The Rev. Pat Robertson’s “Operation Blessing” is next on the list. |
One would have thought that the Salvation Army would have been second or other recognized charities that have documented proof of really helping people. UMCOR under the direction of the United Methodist Church has sent much food and water and survival kits. And even though it is run by the church, one of the rules is that no religious symbols or tracts be included in the kits. And I know the Catholic Church has a reliable charity. Some other churches do as well.
At any rate, if it is not the Red Cross or Salvation Army, check it out. The money may not go where you intended.
If any evacuees are in your town or area, help them out first. They are at your door and you know where your money is going.
