My guess would be that J & H may have put out both black&white and color versions in 8mm and 16mm, with different prices depending on one's pocket. That was certainly very common practice with the 'condensed' versions of movies on 8mm available for home viewing during that period. The grainy black&white versions always tend to look about 10 to 20 years older than they actually are.

I think you need a TV-card for your computer to make a digital recording from the VHS, something like this:

what you can do is, get a DVD-R recorder for your tv, you can get them for about $100 from Wal Mart, I have been slowly taking all my VCR tapes and converting them to DVD, it works great, just plug your VCR in the input of the recorder, the only thing that you will have to do when you finish recording is to finalize the disk.
