We should be careful not to confuse classical pederasty with the modern term. Both meanings are correct depending on context. If you refer to the pederasty (paiderastia) of ancient Greece, you're not referring to sodomy between an adult male and a pre-pubescent boy. The eromenos was a youth, not a child, and anal intercourse between a pedagogue and the eromenos was strictly forbidden: 'intercourse' was intercrural, not penetratory. So helio's use of the word was correct, though that meaning is not widely used today.

Maybe pederasity isn't the same as pederasty.

Sometimes pederasty is also used as a shorthand for 'age-discordant homosexuality', meaning a type of institutionalized homosexuality where roles (and not just in the bedroom) are determined by age. Typically found more in state-level societies, but it does occur in some pre-state societies as well. (I'm thinking New Guinea here.)

Most homosexuality, cross-culturally, can be divided into that, the gender system (feminine men or masculine women), or adolescent fun. The 'gay' system, e.g. two members of the same sex approximately the same age and who after they're initiated (a.k.a. coming out) will never engage in another heterosexual act, is actually a novelty.

Pederasity refers to a sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children.

The classical Greek motif was specifically addressed to young males - specifically defined as the age between the first appearance of pubic hair and the arrival of facial hair (beards defining manhood).

It is also to be noted that male homosexuality in no way was a 'majority' thing in classical Greece. It should also be noted that it is impossible to generalise about Ancient Greece since it was so diverse and dis-unified. Athens, Sparta and Thebes were known for their 'liberal' views on homosexuality, but this was not constant across the Greek world of that era. Corinth for example was particularly noted for female prostitution.

And it is to be noted that even in Athens, there were several (failed) attempts to make it illegal.

Why do you think some older men find younger adult men attractive and vice versa? Is it a mentoring type thing? One eager to teach and one eager to learn? Or is it all about dominance and that sort of thing?
