Actually, Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras met in Jerusalem in 1964 and lifted the bans of mutual excommunication between the members of their respective denominations. That sounds more promising than it actually is. The only Eastern Orthodox congregations that accept this are those under the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. The Patriarch of Moscow (who was in exile) responded with, "How dare he presume to speak for the entire Orthodox community!" The other Eastern Orthodox groups still regard the Catholic Church as heretical.
There is a definite tie between Pope John Paul II and Eastern Orthodoxy. The Pope has relatives that are Orthodox ... hardly surprising, considering the part of Europe that he's from.
