8. The rift between the Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Church was also healed under him I think. That may have happend under a prvious pope. But I am almost sure that he was the Pope.
Actually, Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras met in Jerusalem in 1964 and lifted the bans of mutual excommunication between the members of their respective denominations. That sounds more promising than it actually is. The only Eastern Orthodox congregations that accept this are those under the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. The Patriarch of Moscow (who was in exile) responded with, "How dare he presume to speak for the entire Orthodox community!" The other Eastern Orthodox groups still regard the Catholic Church as heretical.

There is a definite tie between Pope John Paul II and Eastern Orthodoxy. The Pope has relatives that are Orthodox ... hardly surprising, considering the part of Europe that he's from.

I was glad to read about John-Paul's accomplishments because I had forgotten many of the them but, then, he was comparativly young when he was elevated. A lot of reporters say the next Pope will be an older and less willing to change the status-quo.

The great disappointment, in MHO, of John-Paul was his his strict and unbending stand against any change in the Church's view of homosexuality. Scripture and doctrine aside he was simply wrong and betrayed his own fight against Nazis, commies, and the repression of the human spirit.

The other irony of his reign, IMHO, was his condemnation of socialism for repressing religion and his simular stand against capitalism for its elevation of greed. It was a message carfully tailored and softened for the Anglo-Americam "market" but if you knew what John-Paul had said in other places the kissy-kissy huggy-huggy show with GWB was hypocritical and political. On both their parts.
