I knew I was better endowed without the assistance of a partner. When I was young, it simply came through comparisons with other guys in the gym showers, magazines, etc. I was probably 12 or 13 when I was pretty certain, and by 15 I was damn certain.

In my case, I kept growing--ending up at 11" hard/7" soft when I was 17. When I was 14, I had no idea I was going to get that big, but I will never forget that day when I realized my erection was an inch longer than the books said was average.

I took me a long time to figure it out. I grew up before the internet age and even before every magazine had a "Does Size Matter" article.

Hi, Crock -- I didn't fully grasp that I was well-endowed until I was 20. I was an early bloomer and had reached pretty much my full adult size by 7th grade (age 12/13 for those not in the US). Finally, the next year, when I'm 20, I read in Men's Health that average is just a tad above 5". I've been assuming that average was much bigger, and that my 8" is maybe slightly above average. All of a sudden a light bulb illuminates over my head and I'm like, "Shit, I'm huge!" Also around that time I started hitting the gym quite regularly and noticed while changing and showering that obviously not all of the other guys had caught up with me.

When I was 20 I also happened to meet the woman who's now my wife, who commented on my size right away when she saw it. She was an English major and the first thing she blurted out about my cock was that it was "abrupt." :)

I don't remember exactly when I realized or learned I was above average below the belt. I do remember sneaking Playboy and Penthouse into my house in my late teens and reading Penthouse Forum. Of course most of us are 'small' compared to the average dick in Forum. ;) ... and the average dick here too!

These magazines, and porn in theaters (remember when you had to leave home to see a dirty movie?) re-enforced the idea that I was probably just average size. Eventually I did read an article that referenced the Masters and Johnson study, and then other reading material that all said that average was 5 to 6 inches, or 5 to 7 inches. At 7+, I was happy to be at the high end of average, or above average. :D

Sexually, I got a late start, so I didn't get a first-hand reaction from a woman until later on. The first person to see me erect was also the woman with whom I lost my virginity, and she said "You're huge!" as she was going down on me. I knew she was sexually experienced, and found out later that I was her 30-something-th lover. I said that she just told all the guys the same thing, but she said I was really one of the biggest guys she'd been with. She mentioned my thickness as well as my length.

When subsequent women told me the same thing, I finally accepted that my size was just fine. With the internet explosion, more of the scientific studies were posted and I confirmed from those results what the women had been telling me all along.

After reading the tons of information on this site, I'm glad my dick seems to be just fine with the ladies, as so many larger ones seem to encounter 'fit' problems.

crock815: It is amazing how similar my story of finding out is to your stories....

I think a big part of the reason many guys don't have an accurate view of their size status is that there is a very, very widespread belief that average erect length is 6". In fact the largest, most rigorous studies conducted to date have come up with an actual average around 5.1". The 6" figure, as I understand, is based on self-measurements taken as part of studies decades ago. (And we all know that self-measurements of penis size aren't subject to exaggeration or anything, right??) ;)

This common misconception on size means that most guys in the 7-8" range think they are just slightly above average when in fact they're significantly above average; guys in the 6" range think they're average when they're actually above average; and guys in the 5" range think they're below average when they're actually close to average (who can detect that last 0.1", anyway??)

Visually, the human eye can really only detect a difference of 5% or more, and that's when seeing one thing compared to another, side-by-side. So it's not necessarily inches that are discernably different, but percentage.

So looking at one dick that's 4 inches long, a person would be able to visually differentiate from another that's 4.2 inches (less than a quarter-inch difference). But a dick that's 12 inches could not be visually differentiated from another that's 12.5 inches (a half-inch difference). I know a lot of afficionados will disagree, but that's waht research tells us.

That's visual though. Don't know what the perceptibility is for touch. So, when comparing in the locker rooms, a guy whould have to be pretty far on the extremes one way or the other to be noticeably different.

You know, that explains a lot. When I see a cock, live and in person, I seem to come close to that 5% difference when I guess the size and ask its owner for confirmation. I always thought I was a good guesser, which maybe I am, I dunno how accurate others are at it.

What's funny is that this skill for spotting cock size has helped in other areas. Like the other day, I was helping my father cut some wood to fix a kitchen drawer and he was going to measure the length of a piece of wood to cut and I said, "That looks to be about 10 inches." He measured and said, "Good eye." It was 10 1/8th inches. What I didn't add to his statement out loud but in my head was, "Yeah, for cock and I know 10 inches when I see it!" :D

In my case, stories like that were my main source of info. on the desirability of size as I was growing. I already knew I was bigger than average and I knew that those stories represented fantasy penises rather than reflecting the typical range of average penises. So for me it was really exciting to track as my penis grew to match and then to exceed most of the penises in those stories. (I did soon learn that my size did not--in reality--guarantee women swooning at my feet, but the fantasy was fun all the same :) )
