BRMSTN69, how dare you insult shotgun houses. As a former historic preservation major and lover of architecture and the like, I'm offended! You could have said inner city, even though they can be in the counties too, but to say they're in slums... :angry:

Sorry, Cameron, but I've got to agree with BRMSTN69 here. He said, 'usually [not always] in inner cities and slums', and true enough, they usually are. In fact, they are more often referred to as 'shotgun shacks' rather than 'houses'. Every example I've ever seen was in the 'low' side of town. They are usually in poor repair, and often look as though a strong wind could knock them over. Shotgun houses were cheaper to build, and most of those who owned them did so because they couldn't afford better. Not insults aimed at shotgun houses, but honest observations.

To add to what DMW siad, the development of the shotgun style of housing had to do with common city zoning practices in former times. City blocks were generally quite deep, because they were designed to hold commercial properties. In order to provide building lots of small, and thus affordable, area, it was common for cities to designate parcels which were only about 20 feet wide, but quite deep. This typically happended when low cost housing was needed near commercial properties, such as factories. As such, these tended to be the less affluent parts of town, and were often the areas hit worst by urban blight as manufacturing in urban centers declined.

About the only reasonable floor plan that works in a 20 foot wide house is the shotgun layout. Sometimes a narrow hall was placed along one side in such narrow houses, but this resulted in rather cramped rooms, and it was difficult to move in furniture, etc, so the shotgun style was preferred.

This type of construction was abandoned years ago. As time went on, rather than developing individual 20 foot wide buildings, developers began to construct larger apartment houses spanning several lots. The wider building allowed for much better floorplans, even though the area of the individual units may have been about the same as under the old plan.

For these reasons, houses with shotgun layouts are typically found in less properous areas, often subject to decline in modern times, and tend to be quite old. Although vast numbers of such houses were built in these areas, there are some exceptions. Sometimes this construction was used when small but luxurious houses were built in very expensive parts of the city. But, this was rare, due to the obvious disadvantges of the floorplan. In those cases, it was more common to build multiple floors, with just one or two rooms on each.

rainsfletcher: Back on topic, here, I'm not sure my parents ever had sex -- at least not after my little brother was born. I never even suspected them of having sex. They had the door open to their room, even into my high-school years. I'd come home at 2:00am, sneak in and walk past their room -- nothing, didn't even face each other. Very strange. I never even really saw them kiss to be honest, not more than just a peck and even that was very rare.

Rains, it was rare for me to see my parents even give a peck on the cheek, nor did they ever talk about ANYTHING personal around me, so imagine my surprise when one day I was stealing socks out of my step dads drawer (too lazy to do my own laundry!) and I found nude polaroids of my mother, then about 7 mos pregnant with my sister, standing in front of the fireplace with nothing on but a cheesy grin! Off topic: My wife and I had a house in San Francisco in the 70's that was a shotgun house... aka ... railroad house. The front stair and hallway were on the right and went mid-way then zigged and went down the middle... The house was $75,000 in 1973. Now at least ten times that and probably more toward a million as there are few houses in that now affluent neighborhood.
