I was a server for 4 years and I never had this problem. I think what NJ said has some merit. I heard other waiters talk about it, but I always gave my best service to everyone and got tipped pretty evenly across the ethnic spectrum.

The only "group" of people that left bad tips on a pretty reliable basis was the after-church crowd on Sundays at lunch. I always got the greedy families on Sundays!
