The island of Ireland is part of the British Isles, speaking geographically. Politically the north east part of Ireland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the rest of Ireland is a country in its own right (the Republic of Ireland).
It's a bit like Canada is part of North America, but not part of the United States of America, just complicated by the fact that Ireland is both the name of the whole island as well as the short name of the Republic of Ireland which is only part of that island... now that should be as clear as mud LOL
