He was doing "Doug Henning" the gay magician from the 70's: Doug Henning
I think the audience missed a lot of the humor (the character parodies) in that sketch - too young to recognize Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Riley, Fannie Flagg (who happens to be lesbian) and Nipsey Russell.
