I had my hair long like in your first pic, and currently short like your second pic.

My hair is so straight and thick that when it was long, I couldn't do anything with it. When I got it cut, I got a unanimous vote from friends that short was definitely the way to go. For me, short hair definitely makes me look more mature, which for me is a blessing. I think you can make both looks work though.
