well having seen what happens to aids patients in their final days and in their everyday, i wouldn't go as far to say that they deserve it, we live in a society that praises barely-applicable knowledge over real-life education. there are many people who can solve complicated math problems and tell you who was president in 1914, but they don't understand the way the world works or have much common sense because school doesn't balance education with real-life skills.

before i knew what i know now about aids/protection it might've been easy to convince me to have sex without a condom, the truth is our schools don't do a good job of educating young people about the dangers of unprotected sex. i think there might be more safe sex practices if every school did like mine and did a slide-show of childbirth, and penises and vaginas infected with various std's (scared me straight).

in the greater scheme of things, you're correct in the sense that people who know better but don't do better are essentially "asking for what they get". especially when they go against everything they're taught because some hot guy insists that "they're being paranoid". i'd rather be paranoid than sick.
