I agree with you Vinyl, it's dangerous to assume that a blue or red state can't switch. But demographics aren't static. California, to use your example, is not the same state it was in 88. We have more than 12 million more people now and this additional population votes heavily Democratic.

Also, that race was between a popular Californian's VP and Dukakis.
