That is a very good question and i believe it would be both because depending on the person, either possibility could be right. For you, the desire was already there and you were able to launch your particular fetishes into another stratusphere. For others, they might not like it at first but grow acustomed to it and therefor require it. And for people like me, i didn't pay a lot of attention to it until i started to see it everywhere.

You're right, it probably was both. If enough people started watching harder stuff, then that would start making it more mainstream, meaning more people would start seeing it, and more people would start getting into it (either because they're seeing it more or because it now feels morally more acceptable)
In many ways its a wonderful thing, as long as we know when to stop. I'm not sure I want to be seeing an orgy in the middle of Eastenders, or Peggy Mitchell becoming a dominatrix any time soon
