I agree with your last two sentences but not with your overall message.
Being gay has to do with sexual feelings, plain and simple. It has to do with a man's SEXUAL attraction to another man. I have emotional feelings towards my good guy friends but those aren't feelings of lust or desire. By the same token, you could take the meanest SOB who hates the world and everyone in it but if he wants to have sex with other men he's gay. Emotional feelings don't tell the whole story.
The difficulty, as you've noted, is that there is a wide range of orientations between being "straight" and "gay". If you have a penis and enjoy sucking or jerking off another guy's penis that's a gay activity. However. it's possible to enjoy that and enjoy women sexually as well.
The guys who think just because they like to get their dick sucked by a man every now and then and that doesn't make it gay are completely fooling themselves.
