Probably not. Management usually finds some lame excuse (poor job performance, even though all reviews have been stellar.)
It happens all the time, TheRob, in all sorts of industry. Sometimes, a company favors men regardless of aptitude; another company will favor women; another will favor one race or another over all others; and yet another will favor untalented sycophants. All of them are ethically wrong for it. I have never understood it from a pragmatic angle: I don't really care about non-related attributes. If I'm in charge, I want the most capable person in the position. Period. If my job were making the company thrive and turn profit, my only concern is going to be putting the right people in the right places to make that happen.
