Northern Italy (Po valley) was Cisalpine Gaul in the time of the Roman Republic. The Gauls were a celtic people. The Romans conquered them and folded them into their republic, later empire. Hundreds of years later northern Italy was overrun by a succession of Germanic nations, i.e. the Eastern Goths, the Western Goths, the Lombards, and the Franks. So the people of that area, I would venture, are mostly of celtic and germanic heritage. So be careful what you consider Italian. They supposedly speak the same language, but a northerner cannot understand the southern dialect and vice versa. Also, the Trent valley in the Alps is ethnic Tyrolean german speaking area that was annexed to Italy after the Great War of 1914.
